Water spill on MacBook, still works, what to do now

Hi! I just spilled about a little less than half a solo cup of seltzer on my MacBook. The computer was sitting opened. It has a keyboard cover on. I immediately flipped it upside down and the keys did not appear to be wet. I checked to see if it worked, and it was working completely normally. I now have it turned off upside down in a teepee position with a fan blowing on it. This occurred at 11 PM on Tuesday and I have two finals on Friday and I would like the computer to work by then. Do you have any advice as to when to turn it back on or what to do besides the measures I have already taken? Thanks in advance!

Hi if after the measure you took didn’t work I would get a big enough plastic box for the computer and fill with rice and place your laptop in the rice and wait 12 hours if that does not work then go to a IT fix place near you.

Forget the Rice! It doesn't work!!!

This is a very old Urban Legend with no facts to back it up. Desiccant drying agents (silica beads, Iron dust or Rice) are designed to remove humidity (water vapor) they won’t dry liquid water or other liquids. Water absorbent materials like cotton, paper or sponge is about it!

Evaporation has its limits! Not everything evaporates cleanly. Take a spilled drop of coffee or tea the water disappears but the solids stay! Thats the risk, some solids are corrosive!

As an example here Seltzer Water often has Sodium (Salt) or Sugars! Can Replace Regular Water With Seltzer Water? These are not good for your system!

The correct action is always open the system up disconnecting the battery and then blot up any visible liquid and then use distilled water (Yes! distilled) as its PURE (H2O) which will help you remove any water soluble solids blotting it all up with cotton swabs & finger pads! The next step is to go over the same areas with reagent grade Isopropyl Alcohol (85% or better) this has two functions: to clean out any solvent soluble solids like oils and waxes, and the second is to act as a dryer as it will bind to any water is touches and will force it into a vapor! Even still I would allow the system to dry open on a warm sunny window sill.

This is a real gamble!

Did you get all of the seltzer water out before it found its way deeper into your system than the keyboard and if your efforts in drying it out got the rest to evaporate out.

If you believe you may haven not then you do need to open the system to inspect things. Do you have access to the needed tools? Or you’ll need to find your way to someone who has the tools and skills to clean things up

Thank you so much for the response! I just turned it on and it works completely normal. Should I assume that everything is okay and keep using it? Are there any other things I should do? Should I still find someone with tools/skills to clean it and would that be at the apple store?

I would make a backup ASAP of your stuff just in case!

Can you get the needed screw driver to at least open your bottom cover so you can check things out?

As I stated Seltzer Water often contains salt and sugar both over time will damage your system. At some point (soon) you do need to get your system checked out.
