SiliconeCaulk removal from bath surround

How do you remove silicone caulk. Tried goo gone and mineral spirits no luck. Using a razor but taking forever. Is there anything that will disolve it w/o ruining the tub

Hi there @sassylady101 and thanks for posting on this forum. While I’m not an expert in bathroom repairs, I have removed and replaced old caulking in some old bathtubs before. In my experience, the best way to remove caulking would be to use a caulking removal tool. The tool I’ve used in the past is similar to this one on Amazon. I haven’t used any removers like Goo Gone before, but pairing a remover with the caulking removal tool may work out in your favor.

Let us know if there’s anything we can do to help. Good luck and happy fixing!

I would go with Goof Off Pro Strength Remover - doesn’t really matter which can type you use. It contains acetone and xyelene, so it’s not great for plastics but I’ve used it for paint stripping before and it worked very well for how cheap it is (~$5). It’s tried and true, but there are heavy fumes involved - run a fan by a open window and open the door.

If it can remove paint, it shouldn’t struggle with silicone caulk, but you need to be careful and use metal tools or plastic tools you don’t mind losing. Scraping some of it off will help but you don’t need to remove it perfectly with a solvent. It would be best to remove some of it and finish with a strong solvent.

Did you use the special version of Goo Gone? Goo Gone Caulk Remover - 14 Ounce - Use On Silicone Caulk, Acrylic Caulk, Expansion Joint Sealants, Polyurethane Glues or Construction Adhesive. This is a new product so I don’t know how good it works. The vid makes it look like its a lot better than digging it out with a razor blade!

Hey Angela

Remove residues with nail polish remover or cleaning gasoline and scouring sponge.

Succes
