MacBook Pro shuts down seconds after full charge on a new battery

Hello everyone, I installed a replacement iFixit battery for my MBP 17” mid-2010 and after following the guidelines for calibration the laptop shuts down a few seconds after I unplug the MagSafe 85W.

I then reset the SMC while unplugged but the computer shuts down in the middle of the boot progression bar. As if it didn’t have enough juice to go boot it, although the side leds are fully green.

As soon as I plug the MagSafe it boots.

Then I reset the PRAM, yet the issues are the same.

The first day I let it charge 100% + 2 hours min. , then I let it charge overnight for +8 hours thinking it may need more charging time but the problem remains.

The other battery I’m using is a Dynapack model and despite being old and having significantly less autonomy it works without any of these issues above, the machine goes to sleep mode when the battery nears full drain and can resume my session normally. It holds 1300+ cycles, which is only why I’m looking to replace it.

This is the second battery iFixit sent me and I’m currently in communication with them (shout out to Athina for reactivity), in the meantime I wonder if there’s anything I could do or hear from people that had similar issues that can help me.

I’m providing the coconut battery screenshots after unwanted shutdowns at different charging times (+2 hours and + 8 hours consecutively)

Thanks a lot for your help.

  • Update 01 - Fri 31st, 15:20

Following @danj ‘s advice I let the machine shutdown by itself to get new coconut screenshots.

The MBP shut down at 90%, just like the 1st iFixit battery I received and shipped back, here’s the pre-failure screenshot :

Here’s the post failure at 90% :

And after another reboot because I couldn’t get the time and internet back :

If there’s any weird here, please let me know.

  • Update 02 - Mon 3rd 21:01

This time I unplugged the battery and held the power button for +1 min in order to drain the system, plugged it back and did an SMC reset.

The battery was at 91%, I logged in and the laptop shutdown a minute later. Here are the screenshots pre and post failure :

I still can’t see what’s going on, over the weekend I was using the Dynapack battery for work and didn’t get any issues. Ifixit is offering another replacement, I may do it if there’s no other troubleshooting option I can try.

  • Update 03 - Wed 5th 09:21

Overnight and to my suprise I managed to drain the battery entirely by setting the computer and battery sleep to “never” in the Energy Saver preferences. Under normal use it would shutdown between 87 and 90%, so I’m glad to see a change here and hope that fully draining the battery will help calibrate it properly. Here’s a coconut screenshot the morning after the full drain :

  • Update 04 - Wed 5th 16:11

After the full charge, the laptop shutdown when unplugging the MagSafe, here’s a post crash coconut screenshot :

I’ll do an SMC reset and if it fails again I’ll reach out to support for a second replacement battery, I hope it’ll be the right one.

  • Update 05 - Wed 5th 16:19

After resetting the SMC, the battery now keeps showing the “poor” condition, screenshot below:

I’ll contact support. Thanks again @Danj for your help.

  • Update 6 - Wed 5th 21:47

After unplugging the MagSafe, the battery is currently working “normally”, it’s at 58% and the battery status shows “good” with 4 cycle counts, I ran video and a DAW without crashes so far. I keep this journal updated for eventual feedback.

  • Update 7 - Thu 6th 15:40

Yesterday evening the battery went all the way down to zero and even saved the session after plugging the MagSafe this morning, despite my optimism and progress the laptop shut down after unplugging the charger once reaching 100%.

Hopefully the next battery will work…

Still unsolved on my end after 2 iFixit replacement batteries and gave up when the second battery I sent back reached iFixit's warehouse the 2nd of March 2020.

The CoconutBattery outputs look AOK! Lets do this, let the system fail and this time don't plug in the MagSafe charger. Restart the system and then snag a fresh CoconutBattery capture. Are you able to do that?

Hi @danj , I just unplugged the MagSafe and I'm waiting for the shutdown, somehow it's lasting longer (more than 10 minutes so far) and took a Coconut capture before. I'll update my comment with a post-failure one.

Thanks.

just updated the original message with screenshots

I don’t see any issues with your battery or its charging.

I’m suspecting the shutdown is do to a mis set threshold within the SMC logic. This is where the older batteries setting is still being used with a fresh battery.

To fix this we need to fully discharge the system so any setting is wiped. Disconnect the charger and disconnect the battery and then tilt the system on its side so you can get to the power button. Now press and hold the button for a good minute. This will zero out all of the charge in the system. Now re-install the battery and restart the system.

That should have fixed things. You still need to calibrate SMC.

Hi @danj thanks a lot for the advice, I will try that asap and post my results. Cheers.

Hi again @danj , I just updated my original post with the results, unfortunately it didn't work. It was able to boot but didn't last more than a minute on the desktop. Any other idea ? Thanks again.

Clearly something is a mis here! If the other battery works then the iFixit battery has an issue.

All I can think of is the micro controller with in the battery has an issue with its programing. I don't have any answer here.

par

So yesterday evening I went to the energy saver options and set computer and display sleep to "never" to see if it would drain overnight.

To my surprise it did, it was a clean shutdown since none of the session had been saved, so now I'm charging it again and I'll check if it drains beyond the 80/90' % mark in normal use. I'll update the OP with a coconut screenshot.

Thanks again for your time @danj !

Unfortunately, adfter charging from 0% to 100%, the laptop shutdown as soon as I unplugged the MagSafe. New coconut screenshot on updated post :(

It lasted about 15 mins and then crashed again. This is what CB showed before the crash:

It keeps crashing. I give up for now. Back to no battery life (took battery out). I will wait to hear back from NewerTech support..

When I took the battery out i did notice the fan area was quite warm/hot after a short amount of time. Although I guess this is where the CPU is and would be fairly normal?

@ad33 - Sorry guy your logic board needs attention! There its two power pathways one from the battery and the other from the MagSafe. The logic which alters which source is a set of power MOSFET's which do the switching (besides the charging of the battery). This is what is messed up here.

par

Dayum, this is bringing some bad memories, I just replied to your first message without any updates unfortunately. I did too experience important heating on reboots, I imagine that while the SMC was resetting itself it wasn't running the fans until

I hope you'll get luckier than I was with NewerTech support.

Cheers.

Thanks for the update Karim @xgluex ! That is unfortunate you did not have any success until an Apple certified repair.. I wonder if they replaced the logic board?

@danj thanks for your help also. I guess I will have to decide how much I really want to spend to keep this thing alive. I think I will just deal with having no battery. Not sure I want to spend money replacing the logic board in the hope that is the issue.. Thanks all!

par

Hi @ad33 you're welcome, I doubt they replaced the logic board considering I've only paid for a battery replacement, this happened around 2014.

All the best,

K
