I was watching it went out of the room for a few minutes came back and my TV shuts off if it hasn't been messed with in 4 hours so when I noticed that it shut off I turned it back on and now I can still hear the sound in the back ground but colored stripes up and down the entire screen. Why is that and what happened?

The most likely cause with that you are seeing, going by your description alone, is a bad T-con board. Next suspect would be a bad main board and finally (hopefully not), it is a bad panel.
