Is the A1494 for A1398 (EMC 2674) battery model compatible?

Hello all,

My mid-2015 macbook pro is suffering from a “service battery” condition, and I was wondering if the battery of the late 2013 model was compatible with it?

I have a dead macbookpro late 2013 (11,2 - A1398 EMC 2674), with a functioning A1494 Battery (dead motherboard).

In other words, is the A1494 battery compatible with the A1618 battery model machines?

I see there are a few differences between the two, from my initial research, it seems they are not compatible, but I also see some sellers selling batteries that are compatible with both models, and that leaves me perplexed about the question.

Your knowledgeable input would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Kjndah

here's a battery on macsales that seems to be compatible with both models for example: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTec...

Sell your faulty MBP Retina 2013 for parts and you'll get good money for it if the retina screen is still good then buy the A1618 battery.

@Mario Lemerise unfortunately the screen is faulty too :) but I'll follow your advise as I think removing the battery from the 2013 model while managing to keep it intact to place it soundly in the 2015 one is going to be very tricky, at least for a hobbyist like me.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Battery

  • Model #: A1494
  • Watt Hours: 95 Wh
  • Voltage: 11.26 V
  • Milliamp Hours: 8440 mAh

MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2015) Battery

  • Model #: A1618
  • Watt Hours: 99.5 Wh
  • Voltage: 11.36 V
  • Milliamp Hours: 8760 mAh

The batteries are physically the same! I stopped using the A1494 and just put in the A1618 in either system. As you can see the newer version of the battery has a bit more power.

So can the older A1494 work in the newer 2015 system? I see no reason why it wouldn’t as long as the battery its self is good.

Now the rub! As you are taking the battery out you need to be extremely careful! As any nick or damage the the batteries case can put a damper on the swap out.

Hi @danj can you confirm if there is no issues so far by using the A1618 instead of the A1494 ? I’ve seen you answered in another thread that the chemicals might be different and things such as charging rate and stuff could be a problem , but as far as I could tell both use li on polymer (although that may not tell much about the chemicals)

@cslaviero - At the surface they are interchangeable. The rub the chemistry is not the same! To add to this the availability of the older is now almost impossible to find.

So what to do?? If you want to use your system you really don’t have a choice.

Do you still have an old analog B&W TV? Watching an old B&W TV show is so much better on it! But you need to compromise sometimes.
