I downloaded a version of El Capitan onto my MacBook Air to upgrade, think the file is proper corrupted as now the Mac won’t even boot up without the

Solution retenue

The install version is probably fine. Take a look at the date of the install. Go into your Date and Time, unlock it, turn off the auto Apple update, turn the date back to a few months after the date on your install and do the installation.

I can start it in recovery mode but the version it wants to install is the corrupted copy

If you are trying to do an internet install the date trick will not work. You are going to have to have a download install on an external boot drive. Or you can do this in Target Mode with another Mac running El Capitain.
