Is the motherboard likely to be fried?

Tried to protect headphone jack and docking connection with wd40 while on a sailing trip. Probably sprayed too much.

First some apps froze. next day became worse. left turned off for a few days in a warm place. Then seemed to work fine except wifi greyed 'no wifi'

Then 2 days later it suddenly shut down and battery grew very hot and now not taking a charge or working at all.

So is it worth trying to clean any residues and replace battery and wifi or is it likely the motherboard is toast? Is there obvious signs to look for to know the motherboard has had it?

cleaning would be your best option, use isopropyl alcohol if you have it, let it dry for a couple of hours then reassemble and assess what works or doesn't work. where did you spray the wd40? that'll be your clue..dock??

righto, thanks. problem is if the battery is dead (pretty sure it shorted out which caused it to get very hot) so wanted to know what the cheapest way forward is. i guess i'll need to install a new battery before i can tell what else is broken? I sprayed into the headphone socket and also where the usb cable connects to the phone i.e. the top and bottom of the phone.

I'd concentrate my cleaning efforts where I sprayed...the wd40 may have trickled down the board from headphone so top left corner? clean it all liberally apart from the screens...just do the connections. Replace the battery. the wifi might be connected to the heat problem from the battery and may resolve if the battery is fine? well, fingers crossed.

If the battery shortens out you will need to purchase a new one. These battery's also can take NO water damage at all. They suck it all up and then swell up to the size of Chigaco! Best thing to do would be clean the parts also while replacing battery.

First thing to do is try new battery and see how it works out. If the iPhone still doesn't turn on, probably the logic board (motherboard) that is fried and you will either need to purchase one (very expensive) or try soaking it and getting rid of corrosion. If headphones don't play music, you will need a new headphone jack. Also, if the charger still does not work you may need to replace dock in the iPhone and try a friends iPod/iPhone USB charger.
