New hard drive will not format

I just installed a new hard drive into my system and I’m currently booting off of a USB using El Captain. Problem is, it fails to erase the drive giving me a few different reasons for not being able to but the most common one is, wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed, is there a way to get around this?

The first aid check says drive is good. I’ve also tried to do it using terminal and I mostly get and error for unable to write to the last block of device.

Any ideas on what I’m either doing wrong or what I need to do to get this drive to format

Did you make sure the SSD is SATA II compatible? The MCP79 (9400M) machines aren’t compatible with Fixed III drives. You need a Autosense II/III drive at the bare minimum for this machine.

In addition to the MCP79 not being SATA III compatible and needing a SATA II compatible SSD, we’ve often found the HD cable is at fault. You need to get a 2012 cable, put electrical tape where it rests and tape it down to the optical drive so it doesn’t move. Refer to this guide.

I didn’t buy a solid state drive. I bought one of the standard drives that ifixit recommended for that computer. As to the the hard drive cable is that something that I could test to see if I needs to be replaced or is that 2012 one needed just to upgrade to solid state

The Seagate drives iFixit sells are Fixed III. Which one did you buy?

i bought a toshiba 500gb sata drive

500 GB 5400 RPM 2.5" Hard Drive

@pnaples92 It's a Fixed II drive, so that's not the issue. I would change the HD cable out and see if that helps then. 9 times out 10 it fixes it.

Most people with this issue put a Fixed III SSD in, so that's where that assumption came from.

ok i will get one of those ordered and see if that helps, Should i also buy an external sata and use my other computer to format that drive in case that cable doesn't fix the issue?
