Why does my router randomly restart?

My router randomly restarts and the power light stays amber for about a minute and then restarts again. This happens for about 10-15 minutes and then it will finally work again (usually). I’ve determined it is a hardware problem (flashed the firmware again and then tried a factory reset) (the manual states if the power light is amber for more than 20 seconds it’s probably a hardware issue). I have called netgear support and they refuse to help me. I want to fix it, but I don’t know what part to replace or even check.

So, I believe I figured out the issue. The person from whom I bought the router gave me a power supply that didn’t originally come with the router. I believe that was causing the router to overheat and restart.

You’re hitting a catch twenty-two issue, the cost of the router is quite low and Netgear does not offer schematics for servicing it. Having someone service this router would likely cost more than the replacement, and even if you tried to debug it your self the lack of a schematic and boardview makes this almost imposable.

The only thing I can aim you to is see if a new power brick fixes the issue. If not, it’s time of a new one.

The cost of a new router/access point isn’t low to a teacher that works in one of the worst paying states for teachers and has college debt hahaha

Hi,

Have you checked underneath the router if the router feels hot to the touch?

I'm wondering if a component is getting too hot and shutting down the router.

You may have to open it up and check if any components, especially in the power supply section of the router are looking distressed or even 'feel" hot when the router has switched off. Be aware of possible ESD damage if you go to touch any IC components. Disconnect the power from the device as well

It would be interesting to see what happens if the cover is removed to see if it remains on all the time or still randomly shuts down.

Yeah I figured it was overheating somewhere. The router got pretty hot but I didn’t think it was hot enough to shut down. I’ll try it though. Thank you

What you feel on the outside may be nowhere near the temp of the component that is overheating as the heat is dispersed over a wider area of the case and allowed to dissipate into the air.

Just thinking again as to how many devices may be connected at the same time, thereby increasing pressure on system to perform therefore more power required. It should be designed for this but you never know.

Also are you using both 5GHz and 2.4GHz WiFi? Can you try using the LAN port only and see if it happens.

Try using one or the other or limiting number of connected devices, if more than one and check if it still happens.

Process of elimination I'm afraid, to try and find out if you can make it happen on demand so to speak by using different connection options and then find out why it happens unless you can narrow it down by feel to the one component.
