Won't boot missing flashing folder icon/restricted

I've been given a Mid 2012 13” unibody MacBook pro from a friend and which has been said to have a bad hard drive which I've swapped out with a working one.

Tried clean installing using recovery seems to fail after it completes download and restarts. Showing flashing question mark folder/restricted sign/apple logo. Sometimes just the flashing question mark folder

I have tried:

1.Installing Yosemite onto that hard drive via an external enclosure using another MacBook then inserting it into the problematic MacBook pro still showing the same problems.

2.Creating a bootable installer then clean installing the OS onto the internal hard drive. Doesn't work

3.Booting from an external drive with macosx installed and cloning it onto the hard drive installed internally. Not working after successful clone

4. Have also tried PRAM reset and SMC reset

Have tried all of the above again with another SSD Drive

Anyone have any advice or ideas cos I'm all out of them!

You are over focusing on the drive… If the drive is physically good and I think you’ve proved the OS is not the issue and the logic board is working whats left?? The HD SATA cable!

You’re hitting a worn or damaged cable issue! Here’s a bit more Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb

Here’s the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and here’s the guide Remplacement de la nappe du disque dur du MacBook Pro 13" Unibody mi-2012

So besides placing a strip of electricians tape onto the uppercase where the SATA cable rests to help protect it we also need to not damage the cable! I often see people bend the cable to the point of failure! Find an old BIC ball point pen which you can pull out the ink straw using it as a brake form we’ll use it to form the arcs in the cable where the cable needs to bend around a corner. Basically the bend needs to be a clean even arc based on the straws radius.

You’ll also want to install a fresh copy of the OS onto the drive. I strongly recommend sticking with Sierra in this series. High Sierra and newer alters the file system from HFS+ to APFS. While I love the idea of APFS I find older SATA drives don’t play well with it! APFS is very chatty which is not a problem with PCIe based drives which have twice or more buffers than SATA drives. SATA drives can mess up if pushed too hard.

To add to this Apple also messed up with the installers certificates. Apple forgot to update them so the installer you likely have won’t work properly! If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today

Here’s the needed image file: How to upgrade to macOS Sierra Jump down to Step 4, click on the blue link Download macOS Sierra. You’ll need to open the file by double clicking it I would setup a OS installer USB thumb drive following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive

Don’t use cloning! In years past it was a great tool, but with hidden partitions and now with APFS its just not working anymore!

Really hoping a bad HD Sata cable is indeed the problem, I've already ordered a pair to be safe a few days ago and just waiting for them to arrive.

Thanks for the extra tips on installing the sata cable. Will give it a go when I've got some cables to try the pen trick with.

Will update again once they arrive and do a installation of Mac OS sierra.
