What is the main reason why my volkswagen golf will not start?

a family member used my car and said they had broken down, not sure why, and now the car wont start. theres gas, enough water and oil, coolant has been regularly checked. I am unsure of the reason why it will not start???

hi, nothings happening at all. my cousin said the car just died on him when he broke down.

Could it be a problem with the alternator?
