I have a “service battery” showing up which when I looked into it, Apple.com said to reset the SMC. Has anyone else done this themselves? I wonder if the battery has to actually be removed completely and then after holding the power button for 5 seconds, reinstall the battery. Can’t the battery just be unplugged?

Just disconnect the battery and push the power button for 5 seconds there is no need to physically remove the battery.
