Testing iPhones with a USB Amp Meter.

I have recently received a USB test meter. I was just wondering is there anybody out there who can explain to me what can I find out using a one of these also one day someone mentioned the Ohm settings can be used to tell battery health. Just looking for some help on understanding the meter.

The USB AMP meter used on an iPhone is really only good for knowing if the phone is charging or not. You can get an idea of the battery charge by the amount of amps it is drawing. I think there would be too many variables to determine the true battery health.

When using a battery tester the battery connector goes straight on the PC board and reads information directly. When using a USB AMP meter it goes through a charging cable, into the charging port than through the charging circuit on the logic board.

On a good battery and logic board you may be able to tell the health but if you determined the battery heath was way down using your AMP meter it could also be a faulty cable, charging dock, gas gauge circuit or one of the charging IC’s.

Oryt mate I have been told there is certain values I should be looking at on the amp meter, for example low amp draw could be a short circuit but also an amp draw of 3.4Amp could be a short on the VCC Main Line, am i correct in thinking this or am I quite far off.

@kieranp21 There are values but they will indeed troll you and could add variables to your repair. You are better off diagnosing the phone with a DCPS, a good squid and multimeter.

@imicrosoldering Can i ask as a beginner what would you say the minium spec DCPS i should use would be. & i do have a a multi-meter & a iPower pro Squid does that seem okay so far.

@kieranp21 You should be able to pick up a DCPS for around $100 but do some research before you purchase. I do not recommend the red ipowers as they don’t allow you to see low voltage current accurately. I use the white dedicated power squid and prompt to boot by USB but that is just my opinion.

@imicrosoldering Cheers mate thanks alot is that the brand of the squid (Power)

I use mine to test charge ports and whether or not a device has any kind of life if they arrive and don’t seem to be working. If you wanna test batteries, especially iPhone batteries, you could get either 3UTools if you’re on windows or coconut battery if you’re on Mac. But in order to get a battery health reading, the device will need to be booted up and you’ll need to enter in the passcode.

Oryt mate i do use 3UTools, would they be any good about giving me any indication towards a tri-star fault. as I think for example if it displayed a draw of 3.4mAh it could possibly be a VDD Main Short.

Or am i wrong

par

As mentioned by @imicrosoldering mentioned there are too many variables that come into play. Although a telltale sign of a TriStar fault would be that the phone won't charge if it's completely dead.
