Optical Drive not doing anything

I have a MacBook 7,1 (mid 2010) and it has an internal optical drive. However, when I try to put a CD into it, I can just move it around and the drive does not do anything. It doesn't block the CD, but also doesn't try to pull it in or make any noise.

It also seems like my Mac doesn't recognize the optical drive at all; it isn't listed anywhere and system info -> burn disks says it couldn't find any drive for it. As said, the drive does absolutely nothing.

Any solutions for this? Is it a software problem, or will a replacement drive work? Or is it something with the logic board?

Resetting the SMC doesn't help.

I would open the system up and see if resetting the cable fixes things Remplacement du lecteur optique du MacBook Unibody Model A1342

The optical drive would be listed under the SATA ports devices under the system report. Otherwise you’ll need a new drive.

Sounds like an issue with either the drive or the connector. Either the drive is just dead and not receiving any power or it’s the other way around and the connector isn’t supplying power.

I suggest you try checking if the system detects the drive by going into System Information (clamp over a chip) and going to Disc Burning under Hardware. If it does show something that isn't “No disc burning device was found” then it’s most likely a strange software issue that somehow prevents the drive from operating.

If it doesn’t, you’ll either need a new drive or connector.
