Great difficulty pulling head off stick - Dyson V11

I have tremendous difficulty separating the head from the shaft/stick of my Dyson V11 so I can dump the dirt that’s been vacuumed up. I have to stand on the bottom and work and work to get the head off. Or I have to hold the stick and have someone else pull the head off, but again, not at all easily. It’s been like that right from the very first time I used it. I’m young and strong, it’s not a matter of muscle. Anybody else with this problem?

That's actually a different problem that I fortunately do not have. But thanks for trying!

After reading the manual and watching Dyson's how to videos for the the V11. I determined there are two steps for the stated process. First push on the red disengage latch and then pull on the shaft. With this in mind, there is 2 points of possible issues. The first is with that disengage latch, possibly getting stuck and not disengaging fully. If this is the case, I might recommend some WD-40 to clean the latch if there is no physical damage to it. The second point of issue might be the shaft. I would use WD-40 again to clean the shaft of any debris that might be causing the friction/tension. If you're still having problems and there is no obvious sign of physical damage/imperfection. I would sand down the end of the shaft, just a little bit to help with tension.

I had the same issue since I bought the vacuum. Today it was solved! While pressing the red button lightly, pull up on the BASE of the canister, not the handle. Came right off!

Uburback you are a genius!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Such a simple solution that really works!!

Thank you Uburback! I have been pulling on the handle for 2 years (as shown on Dyson), and it worked but has become harder and harder to pull off. Today couldn't get it off at all. Found this, pulled on the base at the bottom of the cyclone, not the handle and it came right off!! I did use canned air to blow off all the dust on the connection afterwards. Thanks again!

Looks like another user had the same issue a year ago and got an answer here on iFixit. I can't open my Dyson to empty the rubbish

I have had this problem with my Dyson 10. I believe that fine gritty dirt particles get in the grooves. I take a paper towel with a small bit of moisture-very small- and run it over the tracks. That seems to help. I am old and I don’t have the strength that I used to so this is an issue with this design. I am going to try to give both cleaner heads a better cleaning. The soft head seems to get quite dirty.

I was advised by the service department to do this very carefully with a cotton bud dipped in WD40 or similar but not to touch the contacts.

I found if I take the brush part off the bottom of the stick, it is much easier to remove stick from the bin. I don’t think it has anything to do with cleanliness. I had a V10 previously with no removal problem. The motor died within warranty and it was replaced with V11. It has stuck since day one. There is no problem with the other attachments.

I used a little bit of silicone spray lubricant and lubed both mating surfaces being careful not to spray the electrical connection. Work the attachment in and out a dozen times, then wipe off any excess. Should be good then. Make sure to clean before each application. I had great luck with this and my aging shoulders love me for it.

IT WOKRED, THANK YOU Marla for your post July 9th!!!!! I can't believe it but now I can get the stick off easily from my Dyson V12 Detect Slim!!!! I tried all of the above suggestions, except using silicone spray lubricant, and the only one that worked was to remove any attachment from the bottom of the stick before trying to remove the stick from the canister. There is a flaw in the design and it's not dust or from use because even after my first use when it had barely been used, I could not get the stick off. Besides the stick and the Hair Remover, all other attachments have always detached from the canister easily.

I Just tuned it upside down (canister on the floor), squeezed the red button and pulled upward on the pole with the attachment and this was much easier to disassemble.

Your posts did help thank you.

Joan,

I could have written your exact words! I've had to put my foot on the suction head, with me almost falling over. This has happened several times.

I have also found all of the red buttons difficult to push in far enough to pull the wands or whatever it is that you're trying to pull, apart.

This is quite a big issue for me, as I was in a car accident, my one hand doesn't close all the way, and both hands are weak in general. I love the vacuum, but I'm afraid I will have to return it because it is not only not useful, it has become dangerous to try to use it!

My husband found that straightening out the stick so it is completely upright helps to separate the dirt bin from the stick. I still have some difficulty. Will use a cloth us clean the area around the top of the stick.

It is a very awkward design. Very difficult to take apart and reattach. I love the cleaning power but also have to weigh the pros and cons of this vacuum. I’m a loyal Dyson customer (having 6 different models) but this model definitely needs a redesign. It may be going back….

Agree 100%. I gifted a brand new V10 and V11 and they both are extremely difficult from day 1 to separate dust bin from stick in order to empty dust bin. My landlord bought a refurbished V11 after Christmas and it has the exact same issue!

When attempting to pull off the attachment stick, the stick must be at 90 degrees to the floor exactly so that there is no chance in the world it has any stress or torque to it. My husband always could get it off and once I checked this gravity/alignment relationship, I have only had to give maybe 3(!) or so tries, and sometimes I even get it right the first time. I got a V11 from a previous V6 and love it so much I put up with this.

I just got a V 12 and love it, but this is crazy. I’ve gotten wand off twice, but now impossible. I called Dyson and they were no help at all. Wanted to exchange product. Someone there just needs to know the trick to this, but it should not be this way!

par

I know the trick that worked for me was to file down the part of the red button that slides into the canister. The bottom side seems to catch on something when trying to pull the wand out. I also lubricated but with limited results.

par

I wouldn’t buy these again due to this issue! For as much as they cost Dyson should admit it is a design issue and refund the cost. I bought a V10 and V11 at Christmas for two of my daughters and my landlord bought a refurbished V11 after Christmas and they all have the same issue and are extremely difficult to separate bin from stick in order to empty!
