New screen -- Face ID not working

Hey all. I had a pretty badly cracked iPhone screen. Face ID and tap to wake both worked even though the screen was toast. However, now that the screen is replaced I am having a handful of different issues.

-FaceID is not working anymore. It says “FaceID is not available” when trying to set it up in settings.

-Screen will randomly click and move all over the place. I will have to shut off the screen and wait a few seconds for it to stop. When my phone is locked it will move so much that a “please wait 2 minutes before trying again” security message.

-Tap to wake also does not work. I have to use the side button to unlock it every time. That’s super annoying haha.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be going on? Thank you for your help!

Aaron,

Good afternoon! When the screen was replaced, was the ear speaker/proximity sensor transferred from the old screen? (more than likely yes, but always like to ask) If it was not, that is your issue. Those need to be with the original board.

From what you are describing, your phone is ghost touching. More than likely the result of a defective screen. Be very careful about your lock screen with the phone ghost touching. That security message you saw is just the first. It will then lock you out for 15 minutes, then 30 minutes, then an hour, then one more chance. At that point the phone will say “disabled - connect to itunes” at which point your only option is a factory restore which zaps all your data. With the ghost touching, the phone could type your passcode over and over in your pocket without you knowing.

Best advice is to get another screen and give it a go. I see a lot of defective XR screens in my shop.

Hope this helps!

Roy

Man thank you so much for your response. That is super helpful. The speaker and sensor were transferred from the old screen onto the new one before replacement. I everything disassembled and reassembled super easy so I don't think there was any chance of breaking something.

I will reach out to ifixit and see what their thoughts are on a defective screen! Thank you again!
