Brother MFC-J985DW paper jams

My Brother MFC-J985DW printer jams constantly. Sometimes it detects a paper jam when there isn’t one. Also the printer refuses to printer on both sides of the paper. I have seen similar issues with other Brother printers, on ifixit, but the models are different enough that they are not much help. Any help would be much appreciated.

I had the same problem, and I don’t have good news. Problem seems to be caused by the printer’s inability to fully eject a printed page; so when the next page comes out, it jams. So, I would have to pull out each individual page before the next one came out. And it would still jam sometimes. Also no duplex printing whatsoever. Jammed every time. I did all the troubleshooting I could, then took it to a Brother authorized repair shop with an excellent reputation. The technician said it could not be fixed. He said he had contacted Brother, and they no longer support the product. (My printer is less than three years old, and I’d be surprised if I printed 1500 pages over that time.) He said that he would have to replace a major, expensive component, which is not even listed in Brother’s parts catalog anymore. Don’t think I’ll be purchasing a Brother product again anytime soon.

I agree. I have moved on to a competitor’s printer and have not had an issue since then. (Knock on wood.) Unfortunately, sometimes you have to cut your losses. A poorly designed, built, and supported product is not worth the aggravation.
