Using Ifixit portable esd mat with no live ground (ac involved).

I bought the ifixit portable esd mat because I’m doing a logic board replacement in my macbook, and it will take me hours because I’m a rookie and it’s not the easiest mod, first time using esd equipment, the strap goes on my wrist and the mat, the ground cable goes to the mat and… everywhere I read keeps saying a live ground, like the ac panel, or even a ground adapter is best.

My house was built 60 years and from what I know it a was semi amateur job, I have no idea how the guy wired it and don’t want to find out. In the instruction video the woman says clip the ground cable to the table leg, which is metal, but has nothing to do with outlets, I have this thing I can clip to, very close to me holding up a shelf, very metal, it’s not on the physical ground though.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07QPR8...

I also have a folding chair with metal legs on the physical ground (but it’s carpet).

Will this achieve anything or did I waste money on the mat?

If you have a pc power supply, plug it into the wall but keep the switch off, then clip the clip to the fan holes in the top

Strangely enough I just dissasembled a rig and have a loose psu, I think this might be easiest for me.

Just be careful! A PSU on its own won't offer ground, its how its connected to the wall plate and the outlets own ground connection. So if the outlet is only a two prong outlet you won't have ground via the power cord!

Jayeff answer is the better one or have an electrician wire out your outlet with a proper ground outlet if the wires wiring can support it. If you don't have three wires (Black, White, and Green or bare copper wire then you can't achieve the needed ground via the wiring.

Yeah, If you were gonna do this a lot, invest in a solution like jayeffs

Hi @joeygrimes ,

How close to a window or a door are you going to be working?

If reasonably close drive a 4' rebar - example only into the ground (be aware of any buried gas, water mains or garden water reticulation pipes or underground power supplies), nearly all the way in (leave about 6” out of the ground) and clamp a suitably sized wire (insulated earth wire from a power cable perhaps) to it and run that in and attach it to the metal shelf support. Then attach the wrist strap and the mat to the shelf support.

There are purpose made earth stakes but these are very expensive in comparison but no doubt would last years longer as they are made from copper and not iron. Also after some time in the ground the iron rod will develop rust on its surface and this reduces the conductivity of the rod but for the short term, iron will suffice

Wet the ground or place the rod in a moist soil location and also place it in a location so that it is not a trip hazard. A garden bed outside a window would be good.

You can't take too many chances with ESD. A length of cable, some clamps and the rod are cheap compared to replacing circuit boards

I am near a window, I will consider the logistics of it regarding obtaining the wire, my backyard condition etc, thanks for the suggestion.

@joeygrimes

If you have an old power extension cord that is used with home appliances etc, and is no longer used for whatever reason, then the wires from that will be suitable.

The ground doesn't have to be soaking wet all the time. Just not dry as dust as this increases the resistance of the earth to the rod.

If it is in a very dry spot that never gets wet from the rain or garden watering etc then an occasional good watering every 4-6 months or so would do.

Good luck with the repair.

thanks, will try that.

@joeygrimes - I do recommend using a Green insulated wire so there is no confusion if its hot or not.

Use an DVM to check the connection. Carefully test across your outlets hot side (Black wire) to the ground rod wire it should show you your house's power (here in the states its 120v) The common side (White wire) of your power should be tied to ground at the panel.

You should be safe so long as you clip it to the chair

How does that create a ground?

par

@mayer energy is lazy. It wants to take the least path of resistance. It will go from the band, through the chair, and into the ground.

Hi @hootonberg

Carpet's a good electrical insulator though and that's what the chair is standing on.

Cheers
