Front digitizer+lcd unit and the back panel compatible with iPhone 4S?

I am wondering if the iPhone 4 and 4s back panel and front digitizer assembly are interchangeable. There are an abundance of these parts floating around on ebay and I would like to know if parts available for the 4 will fit the 4s.

In the teardown it is mentioned that the tab locations for the digitizer is identical to the GSM version, does that mean most of the replacement parts available for the iPhone 4 will fit the 4s?

Update

thanks for your quick reply, however, I would like to hear a little more about your experience. perhaps you can elaborate a little more. which model iPhone did you compare this to? and what exactly was the problem? in the teardown, it is mentioned the tab alignments are compatible with the gsm iPhone 4, is the LCD and digitizer connector the issue?

I just got a call to replace the front AND back glass on the 4S. I will have a definitive answer for you all tomorrow. The repair is scheduled for 6:00 Pacific time. Wish me luck!!

Does someone know if the iPhone 4 lcd/digitizer will work correctly when connected to the 4s? (regardless of where the tabs are) seems like every one is concerned about where the tabs are, when no one has actually mentioned if it works or not.

Well my client ended up going to the Apple store and they went ahead and replaced it for them for free. I didn't get to open it up and test out which parts fit before they took it to Apple. Darn U Apple! Why you gotta be cool like that and have amazing customer service?!?!?

I did, however, come up with a way to "modify" the clips. I used a Dremel to cut one of the clips off. I practiced on some broken AT&T ones from previous repairs.

[Side View Stock](http://i.imgur.com/Yymly.jpg)

[The Dremel bit I used](http://i.imgur.com/wmWRZ.jpg)

[Cutting ALMOST completely through the clip](http://i.imgur.com/soBE9.jpg)

[Bending clip back and forth until it comes off](http://i.imgur.com/QuXwe.jpg)

As it should be fairly obvious, and I cannot stress this enough, BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WITH THE DREMEL The clip rests right against the LCD and if you even so much as nick the the LCD it's going to be toast.

Assuming that the iPhone 4S uses the CDMA (Verizon) iPhone 4 top glass assembly as others have stated, this should make it a perfect fit once you cut that clip. There are 9 other points to screw into the frame even after the removal of the one so it should be more than sufficient to not cause any problems.

If I get any more calls to repair a 4S, I will come back here and update when I know for sure. Until then, Good Luck All :)

Thank you for a very comprehensive answer! :-)

Comparing the close-up pics of the 4 and 4s from the teardown on this site, it looked like the connectors are compatible. As you and grze have stated, the middle clip seems to be the only issue.

Removing the tab would be something I can do blindfolded as I am a metalsmith/jeweler/watchmaker. ;-)

Thanks again!

Just want to mention that the tabs/bezel are actually interchangeable with the glass/bezel (held together with hot glue, or something similar). There is a little risk involved in switching them but probably not more then using a dremel. I have done this before to convert a CDMA a to gsm and vice versa. So really we just need to find some 4s bezels.

How and why are they not interchangeable?...you seem to be a trustworthy source for information however no answer is to be considered valid without some sort of evidence backing the answer.

Maybe a picture of both digitizer and LCD connectors side by side showing a visible difference?... Or cite a source on the web showing similar information.

Just saying they are not interchangeable because you "compared those 2 phones" doesn't suffice, sorry Markus Weiher.

lol - you're right. i compared the 4s with the 4 gsm - since you're from the states - meybe you should get the cdma version of the iphone 4 and compare it with the 4s - surely you could simply compare the pictures from the teardowns - pin counting is fun

sorry mike d - your comment is hilarious - even if you didn't ment it that way. - some questions about the 4s are "fishy" - i would not even care if the back or the front of the phone is the same as from the iphone 4 - most people i know who needed this information pretty fast are pro's wirh ebay stores or regular stores - but no "user" wanted that particular information that badly as a few people here.

I was wondering myself what that rush about changing covers was all about. The last thing I want, is to spend hundreds of dollars to change a cover ;-)

I just tried to use the CDMA screen unit on the 4s and everything is good except one of the clips / holders. it's the middle one on the right side if you're facing back of the screen unit. anyone have good method of cutting that metal piece of the unit? then we can use the cdma screen for iphone 4s

Ok. I'm not a jeweler or watch smith or anything or sort but I am a problem solver. If the only thing different about the 4s LCD assembly is the tabs; why wouldn't one remove the stock 4s tabs and use them on the replacement part. They remove quite easily as they are only secured by adhesive. I've personally removed a number of "tabs" from varying 4's and installed different colors on them. For example: a white "tab" on a dark blue mirror finish LCD assembly. I prefer to call the plastic with tabs bordering the LCD a "frame" and I secure them safely and carefully using model glue in the 4 corners. Just a dab will suffice as I have yet to have my modified LCD assembly fall off.

Just my two cents. Prolly not worth the ink it's written with to most :)

@markus- maybe you're English is bad I don't understand what you're trying to tell me about counting pins. I am seeking this information so I know if I need to buy LCD assemblies or simply use the inventory I own. Saving my business money thus increasing profits. Business 101 buddy ;)

You CAN use a cdma digitizer in the 4s models, there is only one tab that needs to be easily clipped off and one tab on corner that needs the hole slightly ovaled more with a dremel or just not put a screw in that one. (And I mean slightly, very little dremeling required)

None of these answers are clear!!!

Based on what I have read, I am going to assume that the 4S and 4 screens are not interchangeable.

Why are we talking about GSM and CDMA in this thread anyway? This thread should be moderated.

With all due respect Charles, the topic question was about whether or not the iPhone 4 Back glass or Front glass is compatible with the 4S. Since there are 2 models of the iPhone 4 (GSM & CDMA), both using different parts, it is relevant that we discuss the differences between all 3 of the phones (CDMA4, GSM4, and 4S).

Here is clarity for you:

The CDMA iPhone 4 Top Glass Assembly "and" the CDMA iPhone 4 Back Glass replacement parts "WILL" work for the 4S.

The CDMA iPhone 4 Top Glass Assembly needs to be modified (by removing the tab where the SIM card tray goes through the frame. Also, the top left tab (looking from the backside of the repair part) needs to be drilled out to make the hole bigger for the screw to fit through "or" simply just not put that screw back in. 8 out of 10 screws will still be holding the front assembly to the frame which is more than sufficient.

Seth Buffington even posted a video for us here in this thread to make things crystal clear.

All of answers leave questions.. please be clear!

Are the mounting tabs for the LCD and SCREEN the same as the iphone 4 (verizon and att) the same as the GSM and CDMA for iphone 4S?

Excluding the bezel around the screen that closes in the phone to hold it together. this is different i know but its easily changed!

I think the question you are trying to ask is whether or not the LCD and digitizer "connectors" are the same between the iPhone 4's and the iPhone 4S.

The answer is YES.

Hello all, instead of cutting the tabs off of the iPhone 4 Frame to fit on the iPhone 4S, You can either pull the old frame off of the broken iPhone 4S(as long as the frame is in good condition), Or you can order an iPhone 4S Frame from Ebay(Link Below), The Screens are definitely the same and compatible, however I have noticed that the iPhone 4S is slightly brighter than the iPhone 4.

I have an AT&T iPhone 4 with a broken screen, so I went to ebay and bought a new LCD + digitizer. Well I didn't realize until after but I purchased an iPhone 4S LCD + digitizer. Will the iPhone 4S LCD + digitizer(also GSM) work on my iPhone 4?

I had a customer today with an iPhone 4s front panel cracked

I just replaced the panel with an iPhone 4 assembly.

The "tabs" everyone is talking about are just attached to a frame you can carefully peel off and use the one from the original.

Between the verzon iphone 4 and att iphone 4 these screens work just fine.

However, with the same LCD in iphone 4s only the backlight turns on. I still have to make sure that the lcd itself wasn't a defective part. I will be switching it back again and let you know what happened.

Just to be clear on the "tabs" and "clips" everyone is talking about

If you look carefully around the screen there is a plastic frame. Just use your nail or a razor blade insert it between the frame and the glass and it comes apart. slowly slide the blade or your nail around the screen and it peels off like a sticker. If it is attached too strong, just use a heatgun to soften the glue. Re-Use the one from the damaged screen peeling it off with the same method. Apply some double sided 3mm sticker on the upper and lower ends of the glass and slap the frame on. You will be good to go. Plus the 3mm sticker also makes the digitizer itself stick onto the phone's metal housing, holding it even better.

I do repairs on a daily basis, and I use my Verizon screens for my 4s repairs. Ive done tons just by cutting the one tab that doesn't fit back onto the phone off with titanium scissors I found at home depot. I have not found any problems with 1 of the 10 screws being missing.
