Freezer display temp does not match actual temp

I have a GE profit refrigerator/freezer. The user interface displays the actual temp of the freezer as -9*, but the actual temp is 20*. I have replaced both thermistors and the control board. It is still doing it. I can put the user interface into test mode and everything tests normally. I set it to prechill mode and it will get to the correct temp in the freezer, and read the correct temp for a while. But ultimately the user display will go back to registering -9* as the actual temp but it will only be 20*. 

Also, there are no leaks in the system. The coolant levels are normal. Does anyone have any ideas?

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

What is the refrigerator compartment temperature like?

Just wondering how you checked the "coolant" levels as it is a sealed refrigerant system? Do you mean the high/low pressures in the sealed system?

MODEL GSHS6HGDSS. I should have been more specific: the sealed system was checked by an appliance repairman and was fine. The refrigerator temp stays within a few degrees of what it is set on the display (37*).

Mine is opposite, the fridge set is 37 but actual states 60. The freezer is set for 0 and actual is 0. Any ideas?

Since the refrigerator temp is OK and the freezer is still below freezing but just not at what is showing I’m wondering if perhaps outside air is getting into the freezer compartment somehow, a faulty seal somewhere perhaps.

Is there an ice or frost build up around the ice dispenser area by any chance? If so it may be a faulty dispenser ice chute door, part #62 freezer door parts diagram. The door flap can disconnect from the dispenser lever or the plastic tabs that hold it in place may break and this allows the outside air to get into the freezer compartment.

You could also check the freezer door seals as well. Place a sheet of paper between the door and the door jamb and try to pull it out with the door closed. It will come out but not that easily and it certainly shouldn’t just fall out by itself. Try this at various places around the door, top, bottom and both sides.

The paper come out with the same tension as fresh food door which has the correct temperature. I had previously checked the dispenser door and it is ok. But none of these would explain freezer read out of -9 and has not changed from that for months. I have replaced both thermistors in freezer, tried a new dispenser interface board and main control board. I have checked on all fixes I have found like fan, coils (which I clean yearly), and defrost. Temperature in freezer hangs around 20 degrees. Thanks for the paper suggestion I just looked at the seal itself.

Here's the mini manual for the refrigerator that has the wiring diagram.

If you find the problem and a part needs replacing, here's the parts list that is useful.

Locate the wanted part in the list and note the manufacturer's part number for the part that is shown with it. Search online for the part number only, to find suppliers that suit you best.

If you search on YouTube for "(insert wanted part number) replacement" sometimes there may be videos posted that show how to replace it.

I solved this problem.

One of the wires connecting the center freezer thermistor

was open somewhere in the refrigerator so the mother board read infinity but the

display could only show -9 because the display could only

show 2 digits so this was the lowest it could show.

I rewired my thermistor with new wire and taped the wire on the freezer wall and

drilled a hole to the back of the fridge and spliced it into the connector that

went to the mother board.

This was over a year ago and it is working perfectly

I'm having this exact same problem but my wiring diagram is missing. I notice one wire of the thermistor goes to one block and the other goes to the evap fan block. How do you know what wires are what at the back end near the control board?

I'm having this problem. I have taken the frig apart looking for the tech sheet and none was found. GE/Hotpoint no help in getting one. All suggestions I have found do not apply or work. The answer from e&k shapior might work if I could get wiring diagram to show what went were. By the way my model is HSS25ATHBCBB. Hope someone can help.

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

Can you hear if the evaporator fan inside the freezer compartment is operating?

It will stop when the door is open and start again when it is shut (either door -freezer or refrigerator), so you may be able to hear it that way.

If you can't hear it then there is either a defrost problem or an evaporator fan problem. The fan should operate as long as the compressor motor is running.

A defrost problem means that ice builds up on the evaporator unit and eventually ices up the fan which stops it from working. It is the evaporator fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator compartment to cool it down to the set temperature.

The causes of a defrost problem could be either a faulty defrost heater, faulty defrost thermostat (or thermistor), blocked drain from the freezer to the evap pan under the compartment or a faulty control board

A fan problem could be a faulty fan or loose fan blade or a faulty control board.

If you can hear it, then it may be an air damper problem

Note: All the above is for a refrigerator model that has only the one evaporator unit and not two i.e. one in the freezer only and not one in the freezer and one in the refrigerator. That’s why knowing the model number helps as it can be other problems for a model with two evaporator units.

Thank you for the fast reply! The model number is GSHF6HGDBCBB. Everything appears to be working fine and the refrigerator is very cold. Just not sure why the actual temperature will not change.

Can you place a thermometer in the refrigerator compartment to check what the actual temperature is?

If you have an appropriate thermometer check the freezer compartment as well.

Just verifying that if you change the set temp either ↑ or ↓by a degree or two for the refrigerator compartment, does the display alter to what you want but then it goes back to 60°F, is this correct?

When the compressor has stopped running try disconnecting the power to the refrigerator (unplug it from the wall outlet) for about 5 minutes and then reconnect the power and check what happens to the display.

Try not to open the doors during the time it is un-powered to preserve the cool temps inside the refrigerator.
