MacBook Air Mid-2012 A1369 screen replacement

The original screen on my daughter's MacBook Air 2012 (A1369) failed a few weeks ago. I plugged it into an external Apple Display via the display port, and that worked fine. I was able to boot and login. Everything worked normally. Ruling out a problem with the graphics chip, I bought a replacement screen (the entire display assembly, not just the screen) and I fitted that as instructed.

And yet it still doesn't work. When it boots, the screen is blank. I then tested with the external display and that still worked fine. I've triple-checked the screen's connections to the motherboard. What should my next move be?

For background, in the past 2 years I've successfully replaced the battery and the motherboard. There is very little left of the original device.

Lets double check things here... Take a flashlight and shine it though the lids Apple Logo (a poor mans backlight) are you able to see the faint image of your desktop and its icons? If you do the display its self was not the problem, your real issue is the backlight logic on the logic board and/or the LVDS cable and its connection.

If you see the the desktop pop off the bottom cover and follow this guide to disconnect the battery MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 Display Assembly Replacement Stop after Step 3.

Now jump to Step 22 careful disconnecting the LVDS cable look for damage or corrosion as marked here

Thanks for the advice and sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve tried the torch suggestion, and I cannot see the desktop at all. When it first boots the screen does light up briefly - whilst staying grey - before dimming. I’ve also noticed it’s flickering a little.

I’m charging the MacBook now and will check the internal connections as you’ve suggested shortly.

Thanks once again.

OK - I've now checked the internal connection. No sign of damage or corrosion. I've cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol anyway. Checked that it's connected properly.

I've also reset the PRAM and tried booting in Safe Mode. But there is no change: I can see the screen lighting up when the Mac boots, then nothing but dull flickering - with the occasionally bright white line right at the bottom of the screen.

@atticus7 - Let's do one more check, plug in an external display are you see a clean image on it? If not that tells us the logic board has failed, if you do get a good image that points to an internal display failure.

Sorry for the long silence.

Yes, I can see a clean image on an external display. It works fine using the the external display. I've run EtreCheck and it's not listing the internal display - nor is the System Information.

Just to reiterate, this is a replacement refurnished screen that I purchased - but it seems that this is also a dud. Unless I've connected it wrongly. I've double checked this - and it all seems in order.

Actually correction - it's not a refurb - it's brand new. I'd have to be extraordinarily unlucky for the new screen to be bust - just like the original. Can't help think I'm missing something. I've contacted the company that sold be the new screen.

Interestingly, if I got to display preferences, the internal display does show up in the arrangement tab. And if I "Gather Windows" I can change the resolution of the Internal Display. If I manually alter the brightness, I can see the backlight changing brightness levels.

@atticus7 - OK lets just review things as its been awhile! First you do see a 'glow' from the display in a dark room. So we know the backlight is working.

You tried the flashlight test and you don't see any faint image of your desktop or its icons. So its clear the video signal is not getting to the display and using an external works.

So that does indeed points to a connection issue or the replacement display is bad or the wrong one for your system!

Forget EtreCheck! It won't help you. You'll need to run the onboard diagnostics, restart your system and press the D key.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

At this point I think you need to find your way to someone with deeper skills to diagnose and repair things.
