keyboard backlit broken (trust gtx 280)

My backlit keyboard is not working anymore. I am wondering if there is a way to try to fix it by disassembling it. Can anyone help?

Just to quickly update in case someone would find it useful.

I have disassembled the keyboard and simply reassembled it and it worked by itself: please read to the bottom before attempting to do it as it is good to know how fragile some parts are.

This can be useful also for another reason, not only for the led.

Disassembling it.

when you remove all the 20ish screws should look like this. Don’t worry if all the plastic caps are falling apart. put them aside.

remove all the plastic caps under the keys

remove these 3 screws, be careful we turning the board. the pc cables underneath are still attached. You can lose the USB cable a little bit but it will remain attached. It is glued to the circuit board.

clean this connection, it is a plastic sheet aligned with the led board, careful.

check these two parts for broken cables and connections

The “fun” part is reassembling it.

put the bottom part with all the electronics aside for now.

Reverse the keyboard upside down, you want the top part with the keys facing down, possibly with some sort of structure holding it by the edges, the keys should not be pressed on the table to make the next part easier.

Put back ONE BY ONE the silicon keycaps, they will wiggle be patience. The function keys have stripes which are easier to fix.

Now take the other bottom part of the keyboard.

realign the plastic sheet with the connection there are holes that will help you to realign the connection because you will not be able to see it when you will (next) put back in the 3 screws under the 3 lights of photo number 3

Gently screw halfway the sides first, the centre later, to avoid misalignments. then finish it.

Now turn this bottom part of the keyboard slowly on top of the keys, BE VERY CAREFUL or you will misalign the 100 plastic caps OR WORSE torn the cables.

Once the bottom part is on top and aligned, and you are sure the plastic caps are in place, but back the screws AGAIN very gently because you don’t want to misalign the floating plastic caps. they will be kept in place but those finals screws.

If you wonder why so many screws, I guess in part to make our life worse, in part to hold in place the plastic sheet and the led, so again be patient and do all of them.

If everything went well, you should have your color.

(or the keys at least if you were trying to fix something else)

I didn’t it because I had nothing to lose, it was too dark to be used without led in my environment. I understand there are chances that something will go wrong, but it is relatively safe if you keep calm and not rush it.

Remember:

  • All the cables are put together with low protections and you have to rotate the board multiple times,
  • you have to align the signal sheet aiming without actually check the connections,
  • the plastic caps are constantly moving but you have to keep them aligned for the keys to work.
  • Did I mention you can tear and rip the cables?
  • you need some supports to hold the keyboard upside down without pressing the keys.
  • be patience

Just think you are fixing an explosive device.

If it helped let me know it will make me happy.

:)

Hi @kaos665

Did you mean a Trust GXT280?

Please confirm what is not working, the entire keyboard or just the backlighting on the keyboard as I'm not quite sure what you meant?

If it is the entire keyboard have you tried connecting it to a different USB port in a computer?

Have you inspected the USB plug to ensure that it is not damaged and that all the pins are there and are not broken or missing etc?

If it is only the backlighting then as you say you may have to carefully disassemble it and check the connections to the LED lighting.

There are no disassembly guides or videos online that I could find so maybe you will be the first to try and find the problem

Hi @jayeff

I missed the notification,.,

Yes I mean the TRUST GXT 280, the issue it is just with the backlight. For the rest is working fine.

I have tried on multiple USB ports and on 3 different systems, it is a connection not working, probably, as you were saying.

The customer support at trust was not very helpful either, they just told me to try to press the button or to ask for repair if in warranty. So no guides or help even from them. My only hesitation is that I don't want to risk breaking it completely, but I will try carefully to check if there is something easy that I can do.

Thanks!
