Gameboy advance sp not reading save files

Ok, so I got this gameboy off of eBay, and it can read games, but not the save files. It'll either run the game with the warning “The 1M sub-circuit board is not installed" and treat said game as if there isn't any save file. Or it'll say the same file is corrupt and not run the game at all, despite it being fine on other consoles.
