Fastest possible transfer speed between laptop and ssd

I have a seagate expansion SSD connected to my MacBook Pro 13” mid 2012 build. The build has USB 2.0 port and thunderbolt port. I can connect the SSD with the provided USB 3.0 cable easily but I want to get the best possible transfer rate. Question: can I use an adapter to connect to the thunderbolt port gaining the speed it provides without compromising performance.

Sorry I don’t know of any Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt-2 adapter which would allow you to use a USB drive (USB-A connection via USB2.x or USB3.x protocols).

Just for your knowledge the 2012 Unibody’s USB ports are USB3.0 as you can see here

So you have the USB-A ports which can support upto a 5.0 Gb/s connection, a 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt connection and lastly a 800 Mb/s FireWire connection (the slowest of the three)

Sadly the older 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt and 20 Gb/s Thunderbolt-2 drives are hard to come by these days as most storage makers have moved on to 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt-3 and Thunderbolt-4 which uses the USB-C connection and are not compatible with the older Thunderbolt connections.

I’ve been using these: Transcend StoreJet 500 Portable SSD which are still available! It allows either USB3 or Thunderbolt 1 or 2 connections.

Apple didn’t use the Blue color of the port.

I guess my next question would be. If it were possible(if an adapter existed to make the connection), is there a transfer protocol that differentiates each port that would make them incompatible? Or, is the port simply a data transfer hub, and if a connection could be made the data would flow uninterrupted.

@jkrbbit - So you know how to talk like most people in the world, but! Can you understand what they are saying? In some cases the language (dialog) is so unique there is no translation or the translation is just poor. Watch a few YouTubes of a foreign language with auto translation running, clearly its almost useless!

So why focus on language as thats the same issue here! Its not that simple when the dialog is not following a common structure.

So unless you have to time and skills to build something this is wishful thinking as the world has moved on!

Thanks Dan. It seems that the 480/mbps transfer rate that my port allows is my best option right now. I haven't tested the functionality of the hard drive yet in terms of my needs. If It proves sufficient than I'm all set. It might be!

I have looked into the Transcend storejet you suggested and it looks like a viable option. I'm just a little hesitant to commit because of the price point. If it turns out that I need the faster transfer rate than I will get it. Thanks again.

@jkrbbit - Don't forget this is what the highway can support not what the truck is able to move down the highway! A HDD won't saturate the pathway. Even an SSD may not as well (closer than the HDD though).

Where are you seeing 480 mbps? What port and what drive?

Note: My system information clearly indicates that my MacBook is a mid 2012 build, however the USB ports are only 2.0. Don't know whats going on there but thats what it is.
