I have to disconnect the battery too often to turn on this mac

Hello,

So i got given this “presumed to be dead” mbp 15” retina mid 2012. It was not working at all and seemed really completely dead.

I decided to give it a chance and went through the traditional starting up procedures: SMC reset, PRAM reset .. etc still nothing! no charge, no way to turn it on at all. With some hope i decided to go for the ultimate revival procedure: disconnecting the battery and pluging in the charger! and MIRACLE the chimes sounded and it started.. !

Then i have reconnected the battery , and it started up and begun charging normally .. i could wipeout the ssd drive and installed catalina and everything seemed to be working just fine.

After a few days of normal working conditions, the mac died again! it just returned to the same brick state as when i got it.. so i had to remove the back cover, disconnect the battery again.. and it started again. Then a few days later after normal use, it happened again and its gonna be for the 3rd time that im disconnecting & reconnecting the battery.

What could be wrong and what piece of hardware is causing this? the number of charching cycles of the battery is only 172! there is no other faulty conditions. I have noticed when i drop the mac on the bed or lay it on a table, or flip it over.. it is when it will never restart again ! and this requires to disconnect the battery again

thanks for pointing me out what could be wrong with this mac.

as you can see, coconut shows the battery status of this mac book pro as +90% healthy, why i should remplace it? (i have already looked into the battery remplacement procedure, and in no way im ready to do that myself) as for now, this battery works just fine. this mac book pro has something else glitching or broken, and that is what i’m trying to find out. TIA

ps: possible clue : fault with the SHOCK SENSOR -but how to investigate and test this one to make it sure?

I don’t know if it’s the problem with your MBP but the retina 15” 2012 (board 820-3332) has a well documented issue with IC U8900 on the logic board. The pins around this chip loose contact with the pads causing all sort of issues. A micro soldering job on the pins is necessary to regain board functionality. Do a search on Google for “U8900 repair”.

thanks for pointing that out. After i did a search study on the IC U8900, in no where near my mbp is experiencing symptoms and problems as described due to that particular soldering fault/problem. so it is not the U8900 on my mbp.

So you have a flashlight which you put new batteries in, put it in the drawer and forgot about it back in 2012 you open the drawer grab the flashlight and … will it light up or not? I think you know the answer.

While this is an extreme example it makes the point that batteries (any) have two issues: wear cycles and age. One can be low (as in this case 177 cycles but the battery is quite old manufactured back in 2012!

But wait! CoconutBattery is still showing it has life in the battery. Shouldn’t it show a worn battery condition? Well … Yes and no! Keep in mind your battery is made up of four cells. Let’s say one is not working to well, CoconutBattery won’t see the weak cell only the full battery.

Going back to your flashlight you had in the drawer, let’s say it also has four cells and you only have three brand new fresh batteries. As you need four you end up putting one of the dead batteries in the flashlight … will it light up or not? It will! And if you has a light meter the output will be close to the same light output of four batteries.

Yes, it can be confusing! Having to deal with two variables!

Time for a new battery!

interesting hypothesis, but i reject it. It's been now working for a few weeks, the mbp performs just "fine" on full charge. There is just no signs at all showing a possible faulty one of the cells inside.

@sombresot - Then you don't have a problem then??

sure there is a problem. just a couple of days ago, would not power up again. i had to unscrew the back cover, disconnect the battery connector , plug the charger then only it started .

@sombresot - Needing to disconnect the battery is a sign of a latched SMC. Basically, SMC encountered a fault condition during post. Your logic board needs service.
