Spilled water on keyboard and now some keys not working

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx laptop with Windows 7 that is at least 8 years old.

Last week, I spilled water on the keyboard. I cleaned it up and let it dry out, the computer still works fine now for the most part except a few keys don’t work. If you hit them they throw up another key or command. The keys are “sound down button”, “9”, “O”, “L”, “ . “ They are the only ones not working from what I can tell at least. I ended up purchasing a replacement keyboard and put it in myself with hopes it would solve the issue, but unfortunately it didn’t. The same keys are having issues. I know I could just buy an external USB keyboard but really don’t to do that on such an old laptop and who knows if even that would work. I also went into device manager and “uninstalled” the keyboard and restarted the computer but it didn’t fix it.


Can anyone else give me ideas to try? Thanks.

You can try to remove the keyboard and clean with alcohol. If this doesn't work, you will probably have to replace the keyboard.

Options

check the connections on the ribbon cable and plug, might have some shorts or corrosion with associating SMDs.

Thanks for the reply but I don't understand what that means or how to do that. Are you referring to the keyboard or something else? Again, I've tried a new replacement keyboard and it is also having the same key issues.

Hi @bd3616

Since you have replaced the keyboard presumably the problem is on the motherboard.

To add to @logixal answer, disconnect the keyboard cable from the motherboard and visually inspect the keyboard ribbon cable connector on the motherboard using a strong light and a magnifying glass to see if there is any corrosion on the connector pins.

Also check for any corrosion on the motherboard as well. Here's the Ifixit Electronics Water Damage guide that may help.

Here's the maintenance and service guide for the laptop. Go to p.73 Step.7 #1 to see the cable connector.

Maybe you should also try a USB keyboard just to verify that it isn't a software problem rather than hardware.

Thanks, I disconnected the keyboard but couldn't really make out anything...I tried cleaning around the area with a bristle too by the ribbon connector on the computer but it didn't help. I don't have access to a USB keyboard so unfortunately can't go that route.

Any other ideas to help?

Did the replacement keyboard come with its own ribbon cable or did you use the old one?

It came with it's own ribbon cable already attached to the keyboard.

if the replacement kdb does not change the problem then the problem is on the MB. More than likely at the kbd connector, but may also be on the circuit traces to or at the kbd decoder.

It means that you may be able to clean the area around the kbd controller on the motherboard, or you may need to replace the motherboard. Obviously, the issue is not the kbd itself.

Lacking that, an external USB kbd might work since it would bypass the internal kbd controller.
