iPhone 7 self-service/repair plan.

Hi. I have an iphone 7 that i purchased in 2017 and I am searching the cost effectiveness of a self-service versus an authorized service provider. The phone is in satisfactory shape, but it needs a battery replacement and what seems to be a rear camera glass replacement from an accident some months ago, assuming the sensor is not affected by it (after the accident it was cleaned thoroughly and protected by some scotch tape…please don’t judge). I’ve also noticed that the earpiece speaker sometimes does not function properly, but it is not much of an issue since i seldom use my phone without earphones. I was thinking to go to an authorized service provider for a fix, but i don’t think that it is worth it, since I am intend to purchase a new device in mid October. I am a newbie in this whole ifixit thing, so i was wandering first of all if the phone is worth bothering with and if so, whether someone could help me with the parts and kits required for the fix. To sum up the problems are three:

  1. Battery replacement
  2. Rear camera glass (possibly and sensor)
  3. Earpiece speaker

My budget is around 150 euros, with a 10-15% margin.

I’m not sure whether you’re planning on fixing it yourself or taking it to an independent shop or authorized service provider, but it’s best to just call around and ask. If you search iPhone battery replacement you’ll probably find apple’s page on the costs of repairs for your device. Here in the US, I charge $49.99 for a battery replacement. It is the same price as apple but I can get it done faster with no appointment necessary, and although I use an aftermarket battery, it’s higher in capacity and I back it with a 6 month warranty. Now as far as that back camera lens goes, Apple or an apple authorized service provider will most likely charge you to replace the whole device for a used one for probably more than your entire budget. That’s also where an independent shop your even yourself can step in. You can order replacement lenses from the internet as I don’t see them on ifixit but they do have a guide to replacing it. That one shouldn’t even require you to open the phone up. The ear speaker is also something that can be fixed by an independent shop or DIYed. If you do it yourself or have an independent shop fix it, they should be able to get it all done for less than your budget.

hello Aris Adam,

if you do it yourself and put your heart into it, the phone will surely give you many years of failure-free operation. Additionally, you will need a good supplier of spare parts, but that depends on the location. Try to look around in your market, we will compare prices - math never lies. For starters, you'll need a new battery with glue mounting strips, a disposable screen gasket, camera lens glass with glue, a few screwdrivers (you'll find all of this online), and a lot of patience.

You can get my assistance for here or directly on my blog (for free) where I dealing with that matters. Anyway, I keep my fingers crossed. Regards,
