Won't turn on, only works with cable.

Already tried hard and soft resetting it, with no luck. Light turns red when charging. Just won't turn on.

I have the exact same issue, I get the blue light for a millisecond then nothing! I replaced the battery yesterday but no joy. I’m getting the red light whilst charging but no joy

After so manieth time pulling it fully apart and putting it together again its now a pile of parts about to be thrown away.

It helped a few times to pull and put back the flat cable that goes to the button, but last time even that didn't work anymore.

If you still can get warranty on it, you better off chasing that.

You guys, I think you need to check the rest of this forum thread for the fix. I had exactly the same issue and someone posted that you need to open the left ear cover and press on the black tape that is over some wires. I used a little block of foam cut to size and closed the cover to press the tape down and my headphones are just like new! Good luck!

Solution retenue

Solved. Same symptoms: can charger, blink blue in millisecond with power button.

Open the left cap, apply pressure on flex cable, then power button works normal.

My solution is to use Mounting Tape (which comes with certain thickness) in order to apply pressure on the same spot.

I can't believe this worked.... I've been messing with the battery side (right speaker) for weeks.... Almost gave up and was looking into a new pair. You saved me here and I appreciate it. I just can't believe THIS was the answer...

I'm not sure if everyone's looks the same as mine inside, I purchased mine on ebay "refurbished" and it was dead on arrival. Same issue, one blue blink, wouldn't power on, charged it, charged it, charged it, tried all the troubleshooting steps to reset the hardware. Nothing worked.

Upon opening it up I noticed it was a pretty messy bundle of wires and a lot of the ends of the magnet wire that didn't look insulated (closer to the solder joint, silver wire not colored) were able to short out a lot of the spots on the board, as well as the pins on the ribbon connector. There was a wire that pressed right up against the ribbon connector when the headphones were closed back up.

I cut small pieces of kapton tape and covered all the parts of the board using tweezers, sliding them under any wires that ran over those areas. I covered the ribbon connector, etc etc. Just doing my best to make sure nothing could make contact. There was a small foam pad as well, I saw in someone else's post somewhere else that it helped to apply a little pressure against that part of the board and the foam had been pretty compressed, so I added a square of thin adhesive EVA foam I had from Michael's (it's 99 cents for a 8 1/2x11 sheet. Headphones worked really well after that. I have logged 600 hours, 25 mins in the Sony app with these headphones so far. Now my only complaint is the annoying creaking sound the hinges make. That will be my next fix.

Ok, so I also have this problem.

I've removed the left cushion, taken out the 4 screws that secure the backside and opened it carefully. I originally suspected waterdamage but couldn't find anything on the circuit board. Also removed the 2 screws holding the circuit board down and looked under it, still no water damage to be found.

After this I tried to disconnect the button ribbon cable but ultimately didn't proceed as I didn't know how to disconnect it without damaging the connector.

Not sure how to proceed I tried a Hail Mary power button press and to my surprise… it turned on. Not sure what I did exactly I just closed it and enjoyed my working headphones again.

This was all yesterday. Today I came back from work, tried to power up the headphones, and nothing. Just noticed a faint blue light for a millisec. Opened it back up and tried moving cables etc. while pressing the power button and it turned on while applying pressure to the button ribbon connector. After closing it back up I'm able to power it up and down without problems.

Still not sure what is wrong and not hopeful it will still turn on tomorrow but at least I got a lead.

Edit: Turning it off and leaving it for 15 minutes causes it to return to the broken state. After this it needs to be opened up and pressure applied to the button flex connector. Not sure what's wrong still. Will try to remove the circuit board completely next.

Any updates? I had luck pressing down the adhesive tape holding down the cable, but now it makes a rattling noise.

Edit: also i found out that heating up the left earcup for some reason fixes the issue of not turning on temporarily

I did manage to get this to work by cutting down the tape already in the headphones then using this tape to wrap up the exposed wiring where the solder was exposed. since then it appears to be working ok but sorry I don't particularly want to take them to bits again take photos. If anyone wants me to try it with theirs could do but no promises :)

I have a different issue. My headphones don't turn on at all. No faint light or anything.

They also don't seem to charge. There is no red light turning on when I plug it in.

I checked the USB board visually but it seems fine.

Also the battery seems fine visually and I tried to unplug it for 20mim or so. Nothing changed.

The flexcable connecting the USB board with the Mainboard in the right earspears looks a little suspicious. It looked like this already before I pulled it out. Maybe that's the issue? 🤔

I just don't know where to get the right one. I'm located in Germany.

Does someone have an idea?

Hi, you are right, I think the ribbon cable is broken. You can either try replacing it or if your hands are steady enough and you have the tools to do the job you can try repairing the connections with solder and wires. Just make sure to isolate the connections after you are done.

I just bought that cable on Amazon for $8 USD. Yours does look damaged. Funayama Flexible Flat Cable, Gold Plated 14Pin 0.5mm Pitch FFC FPC for Sony WH-1000XM3 WH-1000XM4 Headphones Charging Port Connectors(2PCS), https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BZMQS1YJ?ref...

Applying pressure at that spot is perhaps the answer. It confirms my own experience and fix. My WH1000 XM3's did the same but remained off. They charged correctly, showing a red LED, but simply failed to turn on. However when i plugged in the supplied 3.5mm audio cable directly from a sound source that worked fine. Just could not turn on and the powered electronics is what has failed. Pressing the on/off button produced a faint blue flash on the LED and that was it. I tried all the soft resets but nothing so I then opened up both head pieces and even went as far as ordering a replacement the battery etc, but no change. I later observed online where a few people had some success by simply tapping or knocking the "left" headpiece. I am not in favour in random knocks like this to sensitive electronics but it got me thinking that this is perhaps a physical connection issue somewhere ?. So I opened up the left headpiece, it's relatively easy and you can get video or picture footage of this procedure online. But I then very carefully slightly moved and reset the multiple wires and retaped a couple of black pieces of tape to keep everything down flat. To be honest nothing is really changed. A very suspect connection in my view is that plastic orange flat ribbon cable at one end. This plastic flat cable connection comes from the power and ambient buttons in another concealed section. Whilst re-taping down the wires and reseating the flat cable i was constantly pressing the on/off button and suddenly it just turned on with the solid blue flashing LED. I was fortunate to get it working but after putting the left head piece back together it then immediately failed again. So I then re-opened it and reseated the cabling moreso than the first attempt and this time it seems to remain working. I cannot determine precisely what connection fails but my point is this, some connection within this left headset piece is rather sensitive. the pressure point mentioned in the earlier post is the likely problem fix.

In Summary, The WH1000 XM3 model is a supreme headphone and when it works is awesome but i feel that Sony has under developed the wiring. I cannot discount the fact that a fall or electronic heat may have triggered this fault with my set, but reliability is clearly a problem here.

I have tried to do the stacking trick. The headphones turned on for 5 seconds then they started to scream so i turned the off. After i turned them off they did not come on again. I went back in to them and started placing tape to insulate the cables but i never got them to turn on again. Any tips?

par

i used a block of dense foam, probably a little too much. I got the scream for one second then everything seems to be operating normally. I'm charging them now. Good luck! It might be time to carefully look under that tape and see if any of the solder points have broken or shorted out.

Some time ago I spoke with Sony service guy and he said that most of those issues are because BGA chip on the other pcb side looses contact with some pins. Pushing pcb seems as workaround in some cases but real repair is to re-ball the chip.
