Stuck at EFI boot screen

Hi all,


I recently changed the thermal paste on my MacBook, it was working perfectly for a week or so, even running 10-15 degrees cooler. Unfortunately yesterday my screen + touchbar suddenly cut out to black.

After taking a look inside it appears that I was too generous with the new thermal paste and some has snuck onto the other connectors on the gpu. I’ve since cleaned and reapplied new paste sparingly.

My screen is now working again, however it’s stuck asking me for the firmware password, but whenever I enter it the screen will freeze for a few seconds and then the machine will crash.

My understanding is that without being able to enter this password I’m unable to boot into recovery mode/ reset the SMC and NVRAM, if indeed that is the issue.

Ive tried booting into internet recovery mode, it’ll load all the way to 100% and then crash.

Start up disk collector works, I’ll click on ‘MacintoshHD’ and then it’ll crash.
I’m struggling to find much help on Google for this specific issue. I’d like to exhaust my options before having to take it to a local repair shop / Apple; could anyone offer any advice or help? Any ideas as to what’s going on?

Sounds like you still have some bridging from the conductive paste you used. The only option here is to use a chargeable sprayer so you can blow the paste out under a stream of solvent.

I use True Power Rechargeable Sprayer I use 95% reagent isopropyl alcohol and use an oilless compressor to blow the surface afterwards.

Maybe its time to find someone local who can help you.

I'm actually replying to you from the MacBook in question!

Seems that the initial crash may have corrupted(?) my macOS installation/bridgeOS. Using Recovery Mode I was able to reinstall the default MacOS (High Sierra for my Mac) but not before:

-I had a firmware password set which, despite entering the correct password, would crash the system and disable access from entering recovery mode, resetting the SMC,NVRAM, etc. This first needed to be removed with the restore function from the Apple Configuration 2 App and a 2nd MacBook.

- After the firmware password removal and I could finally enter recovery mode, the ssd in the MacBook wouldn't show in the disk list for installing MacOS. I had to first erase the disk using disk utility.

Leaving this here in the hopes it's helpful for someone else in the future.

Note to self: Less is more when it comes to thermal paste... :D
