Did I cause a GPU failure when replacing the bottom pan?

I just replaced the bottom pan of my MacBook. I recently decided to upgrade the HD, and since I was taking it apart, I wanted to go ahead and replace the bottom pan to fix the latch that had broken 6 mos ago.

Anyway, everything went smoothly, but when I powered it back up, the screen stayed black. The power light comes on, optical drive spins up, fans working, but no display. Because of the HD replacement, I had inserted the OS X disk, but now can't get it out.

I tried reinstalling the old HD to rule that out, but get the same results. Is this a GPU failure? Could just removing and reinstalling the logic board have caused this?

You might also want to try re-tightening the CPU/GPU screws uneven preasure on these will cause a failure, or a cold joint.

Thanks, I'll try this too. Should I have added more thermal paste to the heat sinks when putting the logic board back together?

It really hasn't heated up yet to be able to tell, so that's not a factor.

Hi! Does the laptop chime when you power it up? You might want to try resetting the PMU by connecting to AC and holding in the power button for about 10 seconds while the machine is off, until you hear a tone. You might also try reseating the RAM.

After that, I'd connect the machine to an external monitor. If you get a picture on the external display, and the computer works fine with the external display, then you know the GPU and the logic board are good, and that the problem likely has something to do with the screen/inverter/inverter cabling/video cabling. If you don't get anything on the external display, it may be something with the logic board. Let us know what happens and we can go from there.

Thanks for the suggestions. There is no chime on power up.

I did try connecting to an external monitor and got no picture. I'm going to try the PMU reset and RAM reseat.

Success!! I retightend the CPU screws, and reseated the RAM. I took one RAM stick out to try with just one, and it booted up fine. So, I guess I don't know which did the trick, but thanks to both of you for your tips!
