Using USB C to charge

Have a machine I’m working on which came in for liquid damage. This is the first one of these new Pros we have seen (at my workplace) for anything other than broken display or new device setup.

The machine doesn’t power on. The logic board looks immaculate and it looks like any of the liquid I can see would have gone into the hinge/clutch area or into the keyboard. have tried my usual go tos of unplug trackpad, unplug keyboard. Still nothing. Have not checked the USB C boards yet because I forgot to do it when I took the board out, but will report back if that was the issue.

Regardless, we do not yet have a MagSafe 3 charger for internal use and the owner of the machine did not send their charger. So I have been testing solely with USB C. I know these machines are capable of charging via USB C as well as MagSafe 3. But my USB ammeter says 5V, 0.00 A) and it’s not powering up. So obviously something isn’t working somewhere.

Anybody have experience with these yet? Do I need a MagSafe 3 (it’s on the agenda, but we haven’t had a cause to need one yet).

EDIT: USB C ports all look prisitine. The previous measurements on my ammeter were with battery plugged in. No battery is 5.1V and ~.04 A

@danj I haven't recently, but I did when it was first published, and I have gotten pretty competent at identifying some commonalities across boards for tell tale signs of a specific circuit

I will give it a look again. It's just weird because the board looks 100% fine. Even though that doesn't always mean anything, with liquid damage and no power I would be expecting something to look mutilated. And I just can't seem to find anything.

Answering my own question here, but did some additional research and overlooked something which I had already checked previously.

Big shout out to @tcrs_circuit who I can tell has done a lot of work documenting his findings about this board (checkout https://repair.wiki/w/A2442_2021_14%22_M... for a ton of good info). But this machine will not power on without the battery connected on USB C alone. It needs MagSafe 3 input in order to boot when the battery is disconnected. Which makes me much less confused about why this machine is not turning on.
