history of the car and what we have done

the car is a 2000 chevy cavalier

it has aftermarket cd player that stopped working thats the only aftermarket device in there.

we have replaced the battery and connectors and starter and alternator and yet when it sits a day or two then the car is dead and have to jump it off after the initial jump off then drives fine. but we cannot figure out what is draining the battery dead we even thought it was a bad new battery and replaced the new for a newer one yet still does it

How old is the car battery and are there aftermarket devices installed that draw current?

the battery is last year and yes but it dont work and

What aftermarket devices are plugged in/hardwired? Leaving adapters plugged into the power outlet or incorrectly hardwiring electronics may draw battery current and eventually discharge the battery. Be sure main battery connections aren't corroded and loosely connected. Powdery blue deposits are from battery venting acid, eating away copper wires under insulation. Cleaning requires warm water and baking soda to dissolve and neutralize dried battery acid with water rinse.

Check that the battery is OK. With the engine off, use a voltmeter and measure the voltage across the battery terminals. On a reasonable battery it should measure 11.5-12V DC. If <11.5V DC maybe check if the alternator is charging the battery.

If you can start the engine (jump start with another battery?) use a voltmeter and check the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running. It should measure 13.8V -14.4V DC. If not there may be a problem with the alternator or the voltage regulator.

Be safety aware when measuring the battery voltage with the engine running. Ensure that the handbrake (aka parking brake, emergency brake) is firmly applied and that the transmission is in neutral (MT) or park (AT). Also watch that loose clothing, etc doesn’t get caught in the moving parts of the engine e.g. fan belt.

If you have an ammeter (function found in a DMM (digital multimeter) place it in series with the negative lead of the battery i.e. remove -ve cable lead off the battery terminal and connect one lead of the ammeter to it, then connect the other lead of the ammeter to the -ve terminal of the battery and measure the current that is flowing .

Do this with the engine OFF.

Suggest you start with the ammeter on the 10A DC range just in case it is >200mA as most DMM don't have a range higher than this except for the 10A DC range.

If there is a reading of >50mA start pulling the fuses one by one and replace them each time after observing what happens with the meter reading i.e. no change or no great change replace the fuse and remove the next one

Once it falls to <50mA you will know, because of the fuse which has been removed, which electrical circuit in the car is draining the battery. Then you will have to find out why ;-) Normally there is a small current drain e.g. clock, immobilizer, etc but there shouldn't be too much more than 50mA but then I don't know about your model. Any more and it will impact on the state of charge of the battery if it isn't being charged regularly by the car being driven a lot.
