MBP Late 2011 17" Yellow Tint after dGPU removal

This particular machine has AMD gpu issue since long time ago. I got black screen and white stripes couple days ago. I sent it to local computer shop for repair to remove/disconnect the dGPU so I can still us the laptop. Lots of times screen turns yellow like shown in the photos.

Hi @ankitanks

Can you upload some photos using a camera that isn’t the MacBook screen capture as the images that you uploaded aren’t showing the yellow tint because they are screen shots:-)

@ankitanks also follow this guide to post them directly here Ajout d'images à une question existante

When you click on about this Mac (apple logo<about this Mac)

Does it say intel hd3000 or AMD of some sort

par

@hellomacos Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB. It says. Had to disconnect AMD one for long standing gou issue for this particular MBP.

@ankitanks

Try pushing the graphics a little and see if the issue happens

The strobing screen on the screen is related to the T-CON logic which converts the LVDS signal from the LVDS cable to the needed format of the screen at the desired resolution. As an example the higher scan rates (1920 by 1200 (native) can cause this as the Intel graphics engine can't run at this rate. And even the lower 1680 by 1050 or 1280 by 800 can be sputtery which I also see in your posted vids.

You could try using gfxCardStatus or gSwitch so the OS doesn't assume you have a working discrete AMD GPU.

Even still depending on what you are trying to run you may find the Intel engine is just not up to the task.

I've had quite a few of this fantastic system as I really needed the larger display, sadly each system died from pushing the GPU too far and the software options didn't really work either forcing the Intel graphics engine. I had a long cry when my last one died and had to jump to the 15" retina models.

Great. Thank you for your detailed explanation. I recently disabled dGPU early in the month. I will try the software options as you suggested and hope for the best.

Yes I really like this machine, screen size, keyboard & its build in general. I might have to rely on new 16" soon I imagine.

I just tried the software but both of the software only detected one Intel iGPU. This was the message I received "You are using a system that gfxCardStatus does not support. Please ensure that you are using a MacBook Pro with dual GPUs."

par

Do you think reinstalling OS will do anything to help?

par

@ankitanks - At this point, I'm fared I don't have any other ideas. Re-installing the OS won't change anything as its not a software level issue its just the limitations with this hardware patch and the loss of the dGPU.

Doesn’t look like anything to me.

Are you sure it is possible to capture using screenshots? If it is something physical, you have to use the camera to take pictures to capture them.
