Replacing Logic Board Myself Possible?

Hi Everyone,

To make a long story short I need to replace my logic board in my MacBook Pro(Processor 065-8806 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). I have 2 questions:

1. I have a fair bit of experience replacing parts in computers so could I replace the board myself?

2. I cannot find the exact model number (065-8806) of the board but have found some similar boards (same speed, different model number). Can I use a different model number or do I have to fine the exact same one?

3. Can I put in another logic board with a slower processor?

Thanks for the info everyone!

-Dan

If you don't mind, I would like to know why you think the motherboard needs to be replaced.

A friend spilled water on the table and it crept into the back of the laptop. I took it into an Apple Service Provider and they said that the logic board was definitely fried.

Hi, Yes you should be able to do it yourself. As to substitutions of logic boards this is an iffy area because different boards are not all shaped the same or have the same connectors. You will have to list the part numbers of the boards you are considering for the experts to advise on this. Its usually best to replace with the same board. As to question three the same caveats apply. Good luck. Ralph

Thanks Ralph. I just learned that a new logic board would cost me $1,500. But the tech that I was talking to mentioned that Apple has a "water damage" solution where they will cover any of the parts that were affected by water for a certain cost that was cheaper then the new board. The tech said that it would be cheaper then fixing it myself. Have you or anyone else heard of this?

par

No I haven't heard of it. When you get the details let us know. Ralph

Turns out that Apple has a "Water Damage" fixit plan with 3 tiers. For my situation with the logic board I made it to the 3rd tier. With that there is a $1200 cap where they fix any of the water damage for that amount. This is cheaper then me having to pay $1500 to do it myself.

But just as I was about to turn my mac into Apple I thought I would try to plug it in one more time and see if it started. Turns out that after letting it sit for 3 weeks the crazy thing turned on! It's been working fine for a day now. I can't explain it, but somehow the water didn't originally fry any of the logic board. I'm one happy guy!

as you've found out, IMO with water damage it sometimes pays to wait more than just a couple days to make sure things have dried out completely before committing to an expensive repair.

This might well be worth your attention, they state they will replace your logic board for $395 plus shipping.

Maybe next time, glad it's working.

Mayer that link is broken, but that price cannot be for the logic board plus service. If it is, then it is a slower board. Also know that my logic board is the latest 3.06 GHZ model. And that one costs $1,500 for the MacBook Pro.

Looks like you have to work your way to the correct machine as the link for specific machine won't work. http://www.dttservice.com

Here's my question in all this, how did the apple tech come to the conclusion that it was in fact your logic board that was out of order? In the days of old, auto mechanics could tell ya anything was wrong with a car and you would just pay the big bucks. It seems our computers are in the same boat or should I say we are all in the same boat! I did the toyota tech program and I dare a mechanic to pull the wool! I just dropped my MBP 17" at the apple store for the same diagnosis, logic board is out! Mine would just spin for a quick second and die. Ok, so he says it's around 900 for apple to repair it and they now have this out source program when a contracted repair shop will fix it for 310.00 plus uncle sams portion. 100 bucks for labor and 210 for the board...this sounds like a deal so I went for it. I have not time to waste or bother with doing this myself when I can get a guarantee for 90 days and it's done right..fair is fair...unless it truly was not my logic board! And that's where the skepticism comes in! I figure for this price and all is well, I can get back to work in 7 or less days! Good enough for me! I'm glad your computer is working.

The $310 deal seems to pop up now and then but doesn't appear to be consistent.

I agree with you completely. I hear of way to many fried logic boards compared to what I actually encounter in my shop. You hit one of my pet peeves. Best Buy seems to be the worst offender around here. Poor technicians claiming it's the logic board and quoting a $1000 price tag, then they send it in and the $ pays for the new DC-IN port or reseated RAM chip.(actual cases that have come to me). admonition - GET A SECOND OPINION on a logic board repair, never take your Mac to a repair place that mainly handles PC's (Macs are a side line to them). Find your Mac tech via recommendations (also a great icebreaker in a coffee shop) I went 10 years with no advertising except customer recommendations.
