Need to get started coil for a 5 HP Tecumseh motor no model number

I don't have a model number to go by I bought a start coil for this 5 horsepower Tecumseh motor but it wouldn't line up with my mounting hole on the side of the motor the only thing I can think of is to measure my bolt hole fittings and see if I can find a coil that has the same measurements where the holes are so I can mount it where mine goes but there's another problem the two little ears that stick out from the head that holds the coil on one of them has broken halfway off I rethreaded it and got a longer bolt to put in there and used thick washers behind it to build it out so the coil will tighten down evenly but it came loose and now it's threads are stripped again is there any way I can fix this without buying a new head

Hi J Keef,

Let me introduce you the the solution to your problem - the HeliCoil. It's a metal insert designed specifically for the problem you have. A website called Gokul Traders has a pretty good information page on them.

What is Helicoil?

Here's what you need to know about them.

What is a Helicoil?

A HeliCoil is a coiled-wire type of thread repair insert used to create internal screw threads to accommodate standard-sized fasteners.

Thread Repair Inserts –

As the name suggests, a thread insert is a part that is installed – or inserted – into a workpiece. When properly installed, inserts provide high-quality, wear resistant, permanent internal threads.

In many situations, thread inserts are ideal to repair stripped threads. Thread inserts are also commonly used in new part designs because of the many benefits that they offer.

Thread inserts are supplied in a variety of configurations. However, there are basically two general categories of inserts…

  1. Helical Coiled-Wire Thread Insert
  2. Solid Body Thread Insert

You'll need to know the exact size of the bolt; including the diameter and thread pitch and whether it's SAE or metric. If you don't know, you can take it to a hardware store where they'll have measurement tools you can use to find the size. Alternatively you can try fitting different size nuts on it until you find the right size then note which one fit.

Now that you know what size you need, you'll go on Amazon, eBay or head to an auto parts or hardware store and buy a HeliCoil kit. The kit will include the threaded insert you need, along with a thread tap to cut the new threads, and a tool to install the insert. Most kits I've seen don't come with a drill bit, so if yours doesn't you'll need to make sure you have the right size bit - the HeliCoil kit will tell you what size to use.

NAPA Auto Parts has a good page with step by step instructions you can follow for your first HeliCoil installation.

Good luck; let us know how it goes.
