So who told you your check engine light was due to a loose gas cap? Did they scan for trouble codes in the diagnostic port? Because there are hundreds of reasons the check engine light can be turned on, and guessing won't lead you to the answer.

You'll need to get the codes scanned. Scanners are available for as low as $10 for bluetooth versions that connect to an app on your phone, and prices can run up to the thousands of USD for professional quality scanners.

However, for a one time use, here in the US most auto parts stores will scan your codes for free. You might call and check your local store first to make sure, but then you can just drive up and ask; they'll bring their scanner to your rig, hook it up, scan it and give you the results.

Once you know what the trouble code(s) are, then you'll have an idea of what needs to be fixed.

Typically a code that can be set by a loose gas cap has to do with the evaporative emission system, but a loose cap is not the only reason that code can come up, so it's worthwhile tightening the gas cap and seeing if the code comes back, but once it returns it's time to start diagnosing why it's being set.

So get your code or codes and come back and add them to your question and then we'll be able to help. Until then you're just shooting in the dark.

Hmm, seems a bit premature of your mechanic to blame a check engine light on a loose gas cap. Of course it's possible and it's always worth checking the gas cap just to be safe, but I wouldn't ignore a check engine light based on the idea that it *might* be a loose gas cap.
