Thunderbolt port 2 works, but Thunderbolt port 1 does not.

My MacBook Pro recently had its logic board replaced by Apple. Since the replacement, the second thunderbolt port works perfectly. But the 1 port does not.

If I use an official Thunderbolt to VGA or Thunderbolt to Ethernet cable, nothing happens. I have tried different displays and Ethernet devices. They all work in port 2, but not in port 1.

Somtimes, using the Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in the 1st Thunderbolt port will make the Mac freeze until the cable is unplugged (This does not happen in the second port).

The Apple store ran diagnostics on it and replaced the flexible cable. But the issue still remains. They are adamant that it works. All their diagnostics software confirms that it is working as well.

(I am unable to go to the store and so have the Mac delivered by courier, which is why I cannot check it before leaving the store).

Any idea what the issue could be? Thanks!

Ship it back! But supply them a thumb drive with a video clearly showing the failure using the same gear between the ports. I would also print out a few pics so they see it that way too!

Thanks! Unfortunately, they said that because they have replaced the iO board and logic board, there's nothing more they can do.

@big_smile - Did you get a fresh Apple made TB cable to validate? If you did and it still fails they likely took the board out then instead of installing a fresh one put it back in!

Also are you sure it was serviced by Apple and not an independent? Some countries don’t have access to a real Apple repair depot, Apple contracts the work to them. If that’s the case I’ve heard stories of things not fixed as they have metrics they need to comply with from Apple.

I would escalate the issue with a call and email to Apple both locally as well as big Tim.

@danj Thanks for your help. Yeah, it was serviced by an actual Apple store. I shall try your suggestions. Thanks!
