Mine did this: volume could not be turned up and down on the main unit (i don’t use the remote control) with the rotary knob. Additionally: no other buttons worked.
Stumbled upon the question here where pressing the CD Eject button turned the unit on. Tried it on mine: not only did that work, it cleared all weirdnesses. I could again adjust the volume, turn the unit on and off, change stations and modes at my discretion rather than the CDX-GT565UP’s seemingly random choice.
Theory is that electrically conductive contamination on one or more pushbuttons in the front panel faceplate is jamming the switch matrix, so the processor cannot process any other control manipulations. Full details in my answer to the Eject button question.
