Changed battery in 3GS, getting error 29 even with 0435 battery D:

I wiped my 3GS and installed a new battery (the original battery's APN: 616-0431), but as I was trying to install the latest iOS, the phone started rebooting every few minutes.

I took the new battery out and tried a *different* new battery, but I found myself faced with a persistent error 29. I tried:

  • Using iRecovery to issue a 'setenv auto-boot true' command
  • Holding down the home button while plugging in the USB cable
  • Clearing out the hosts file

Finally I found one of iFixit's error 29 threads and assumed that I must have the wrong battery, so I ordered an iFixit battery with APN: 616-0435.

No dice, unfortunately. I can't get this thing to work. Do I need to jailbreak it or something? I've seen several forum threads mentioning redsnow and pwnagetool, but I've never jailbroken a phone and have no idea where to start.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

reidman, try iRecovery first and see if you can kick your phone out of the recovery loop. Download it from here and follow the instructions. Hope this helps, good luck.

Also iTunes Error codes are never very specific to the cause. However Error 29 on 3GS is most often due to incompatible battery, but not always, it could be other hardware problem. If still problems, try the old battery again, if it restores OK then you have incompatible battery problem. If you get Error 29 with old battery you have another hardware problem.

Thanks polly, I hadn't considered putting the original battery back in. I'll give that a shot and report back later!

Put the original battery in and was able to reformat the phone and get it working again!

Unfortunately, with the iFixit battery the phone just keeps restarting (back to square one) so I'm hoping it's just a dud and that iFixit will send a replacement.

Great to have it back working again. All you have now left to do, is to accept the answer that helped you the most ;-) (that's the only pay for all of us volunteers)

I have a 3GS that had APN 616-0431 for the original battery; didn't know the APN when I ordered a new battery from Amazon. What I got was APN 616-0435.

When I installed the new battery, I ran into the issues of restarting, and weird charging too. Eventually this settled down, and the iPhone seemed to work okay.

Then, when the update for ios 6.01 came out, I naively went ahead and installed it. That's when the real fun began!

The phone went into recovery mode, and would not come out of it. When I tried to restore with iTunes, I got the dreaded "Error 29" (as well as a few others on different occasions) on my MacBooks, as well as on a windoze laptop.

I tried the various hacks to get out of Recovery Mode, but the phone would always go back into Recovery Mode.

I even went to an Apple store, where the purported 'genius' had the same issue I did, and then tried to sell me a new phone. (He never questioned me about hardware changes to the phone. Nor did he suggest a new battery, even though I saw that come up on his iPad as an option along with the replacement iPhone!)

I finally came to my senses and ordered the proper battery (616-0431) from iFixit. New battery came 2 days later, and bingo, I was able to restore the iPhone without problems, and I'm back in business!

Gotta love iFixit!
