the phone was dropped, from the outside the appearance is untarnished but obviously something went wrong inside, it now fails to read when i insert the charger(battery is failing) and the home button wont work either...not only this but sound is failing too...both the earphone dock and the speaker?...would i be better off just buying a new phone or is it fixable??

it's definitely fixable. You would need to open the phone and check that connector no.4 is on, this controls all of those functions. If you reconnect that and you still have none of the functions then the dock connector will need replacing. I think this is a simple case of a loose connection so you won't need to spend a whole lot of money.This has a handy video to watch that shows you how to open the phone and get to the dock/replace dock. iPhone 3GS Dock Connector
