Paper Feed Fails Intermittently & Often

For the last few months, the paper feed often fails, for both print-from-computer and copy-at-the printer.

This HP 2655 is 4-years-old, has excellent print quality with no paper jams.

I’d like to fix the feed problem and keep this printer.

The orange out-of-paper light blinks, even though there may be one or several pages in the feeder.

This failure happens sometimes with the first page, and sometimes only after several have already fed and printed. It fails to feed more often than not.

Three things may help:

1. Sometimes, pushing the blinking light button once or several times starts thepaper feeding.

2. Sometimes, taking the paper our, fanning the bottom edges, and replacing it works.

3. Sometimes, tapping the top of the paper stack works.

All pages always, eventually, feed and print, but only after fiddling with the button and/or the paper in the feed.

The same failure happens using either HP’s recommended paper, or paper from Target.

Running HP Utility’s  "paper feed cleaning" does not help.

Looking with a flashlight at the paper-feed area shows no problem I can see.

I’ve found no help on the HP website or from downloading the 128 page manual.

Solution retenue

Based on your description, I will try to answer your questions.

  1. When only the first page fail to feed then it caused by your decoder (plastics like, circle in shape on the left side of your printer) clean it.
  2. When always fail to load the papers and sometimes can load the paper then it caused by your printer roller (rubber material) needs to be replaced.

Hope these will answer your questions.

Thanks, wongcie, for your answers.

1. Failures do happen sometimes with the first page, but other times the first page feeds with no problem, but not the second, third, or other pages, so I'm ruling out the encoder as a cause.

2. I looked for replacement rollers for this printer, but only found reconditioned rollers costing more than I cared to pay.

3. But your mention of the rollers caused me to try cleaning them one last time, even though they did not seem dirty, thinking maybe something like "rubber-dust" on them. I used several cotton swabs and distilled water, continuing to clean until there were no stains on the last swab.

4. This seems to work. I've only printed a few pages so far, once using the copy feature and then printing a two-page and another three-page document. I'm hoping for the best.

Thanks

After six plus weeks since cleaning the printer's rollers, the paper feed continues to work almost every time.

The lesson-learned was to do the cleaning, *very completely*, taking time to set the printer where I could easily use a light, see, reach, and rotate the rollers, using a series of clean swabs, keeping track of how much of each roller was brushed, and making sure the whole surface of each roller came clean, with no stains on the last swabs.

Nice jobs keep posting when you find some useful methods, so the other can learn too.
