Screen adhesive doesn't last long term

I have fixed 2 dozen of these Ipods. The A1367 Ipod Touch 4th Gen. I fix all Apple products and almost every HTC phone and these are by far the most difficult for me. They never get easier. So after you fight to connect the Touchscreen connector, clean all the old adhesive and re fit new adhesive you must be extremely careful pushing the new screen into place. But the adhesive never seems to stick long term. I have had a very hard time with this issue. I buy the 3M 300LSE or whatever. I use the same stuff on Iphone 3G and 3gs but on these IPods it doesn't seem to work well. I am hoping someone who has done multiple repairs of these could let me know what they do. I have actually used Gorilla Glue . Almost every 1 I've ever fixed about 4 months later the screen starts to lift. What am I doing wrong???

I use die cut adhesive, then I use an xacto to cut two square pieces that go on opposite sides of where the Home button is.

The three most common overlooked steps are...

1. You must put the correct "Z" fold in the slender screen connector cable. If it's not right the top left of the screen will not seat.

2. When you've laid down your adhesive, tilt the screen up from the bottom about 30 degrees and work from the top down using your thumbs to seat the screen. If you do it just right you can actually feel the screen pop into place at different locations.

3. If the metal around the frame is dented the glass will not fit back in properly. If it is a slight ding then you can cut out a bit of the plastic with an xacto ... with a bad ding, I've never been able to straighten out the frame, so I just charge extra for a new rear plate replacement.

(btw, if your in the repair business give a general price, but not an exact price until you inspect that frame for yourself.)

Please don't use glue - if you or another tech ever has to go back in they may end up having to replace the entire rear frame because the glass, glued in, will not come off. - and heating super glue type products produces cyanide vapors.

great point about the glue, I have seen way to many of those, they never end well.

Also, I flip the phone over (powered off and cooled down) on a flat surface, put a cloth over the back and place a light book on top over night. Keeps a little pressure on while the 300SLE fully sets. Check 3M's web site on the tech specs on cure time + temperature/humidity, etc.

First off I would not use glue, if you have to take the screen off for any reason you will run into issues. It appears you have the correct adhesive for the job. To start I would save all the original adhesive you can (any without glass or debris in it). It helps the screen sit properly because if you notice the placement on the new pre cut adhesive is different than the original. If you have to remove the adhesive make sure you get everything! Old adhesive, debris and the plastic layer below it. This adhesive is also heat activated so after you change a screen you should heat it up and press it down to help it sit. You will also run into issues with the casing. If it is dented at all the screen has trouble sitting properly. Do some adjusting if need be (as savage as this sounds carefully pound them out with hammer and screwdriver). Also make sure you are using the metal bracket and placing it properly over the ambient light sensor because that makes a lot of difference in the way the screen sits. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the response yes I clean the edge thoroughly and remove all glass and adhesive. The problem i believe is the metal brackets placement. i cracked the first repair i attempted because i pushed down and the clip was literally millmeter off and it cracked corner so now I put the metal piece in the ipod and then push screen down ontoo it with the double sided adhesive on it. I'm sure this is my problem but if you don't attach it in exactly the right place on new screen it breaks the screen.

In fact now that you mention it i'm 100% sure the metal clamp is my issue I've fixed 3 of these things since I posted this question and they are the most difficult item I repair . I've even started turning them down currently I have 5 to repair but, I would love to figure out the issue before I do any.

It just takes some practice. Make sure when you are placing the screen that you slide that clip into place, I hold the screen at a slight angle and push it in place on the top first before I try to set any other part. The metal brackets can be tricky after they have been bent. If it is giving you a lot of trouble you can replace the screen without it, just be very diligent in your adhesive placement.

Thanks again Jason yes that clip is most deffinitely where I believe my issue is. And as I stated I repair ALOT of phones, Ipads, IPods etc. So this issue I'm having with these is extremely frustrating. I stopped using the metal clips after I broke a screen with 1 and I didn't really think they were that important if I was very good with the adhesive strips but, it proves alittle more challenging than I anticipated. I have purchased the adhesive kit you sell here so hopefully that will help.

par

no problem. I strongly recommend using the metal clips as they tend to help the screen sit properly but it can be done without it. I actually am not affiliated with this site at all. I would suggest shopping around some auction sites, you can find good bulk prices.

Last question I swear how do you make sure you are placing the metal clip properly? I was attaching them with adhesive to back of screen but it was cracking the corner like I said so I'm wondering if there are any tricks or just hit or miss luck

Has anybody tried putting the ipod touch in the oven to help the adhesive cure? One of the videos suggested doing this but i was a little apprehensive. If anyone has tried this, let me know how it worked out for you!

Thanks!

Silicone works the best. I've done 100+ with it and they turn out fantastic. Getting the screen back off after the silicone cures is also fairly easy because the silicone stays soft when cured.

You have to have the metal clips. Buy the metal clips on ebay. Attach the clips to the screen with epoxy, then attach the screens with adhesive. That works. Or put every repaired ipod in a griffin survivor case.

Wes.

wonder why someone down voted these answers without even saying why? It's the best way of doing it.

Hi Jon yes stupid of me i wont be trying that again , just to say i examined the board more closly and your right one of the components by the back screen connector had migrated off the board somewhere , fortunatly i have a doner board , so removed the said missing cap and replaced it back in place wonder of wonders its working fully now ;-))

I do think you where right on the battery as although it is new it is not giving me much play time and seems to only last about 4 hours when playing music , i have just ordered a new one , fingers crossed it will help ....

Placing the metal clip is easier than you think. With white screens the hole lines up exactly with the camera hole and with the black screens hold it up to a light source before aligning it the same way.

You should make sure that metal clip is used because the screen uses the clip to lock onto the frame.

Make sure all screws are seated flush in the back plate

all old adhesive has been removed from the edges of the frame and also from the back of the metal shield. Don't forget the adhesive on the speaker also.

Finally, you can use elastic bands wrapped around top and bottom and left overnight or use bulldog clips but be careful with them as they are a bit overpowered

1st you put it in the oven for 4 hours.....besides the possibly of blowing up the battery. Your probably melted some of the wire ribbons or component in side. Puts use a heat gun for a minute or a hair dryer.
