Will not boot up past the apple and the no symbol

macbook A1181

When I try to start the computer it shows the apple and then goes to the no symbol (the circle with the line through it. I tried putting the OS X disc in and rebooting with the C pressed and nothing happens. I also tried this with the Snow Leopard disc as well. Is the disc drive bad? It takes the disc and spins but does not seem to make any difference.

I removed the hard drive and put in the OS X Disc and held down the C key and restarted the computer. I could hear noise from the DVD drive but nothing happened after 5 minutes.

Remove the hard drive and see if it will start from the DVD. If so replace the drive. Here's how: Remplacement d'un SSD dans le MacBook Core 2 Duo

Are you using the 10.6 disk? Do you get anything on the screen?

What should I do next?

What kind of OS X disk(s) are you trying to use: One that originally came with the laptop, a retail version or a disk that came with another Apple product? Instead of booting while pressing "C", I suggest you try booting while holding the Option key down. That will bring you to a menu where you can select a drive to boot from if the Apple firmware found any bootable devices. If you have one try booting from an external USB drive.

I think your circle with a line is a kernal panic ? you need to look what that is up and find out first. If so, that is a hardware issue your airport card, dvd drive ,ram , i've even seen bad screens cause kernal panics and bad cpu's. You would have pull everything out and test it in various ways something hardware related is causing that to happen.
