Error message: "Couldn't find bootable..." but SSD and OP system is OK

Hi,

 

I would need your advice. I have a Surface Pro 7+ (core i7, 32GB, 1TB SSD) that was bought 2,5 years ago. A month ago it started to have blue screen than, it restarted and after that worked fine for a few days. After that it had the same error message and restarted again and worked again for a few days. However at once, after restarting I had the message

"Couldn't find a bootable operating system"

 

I searched on the internet and after several attempt to recover the computer or unlock the bitlocker I stated that probably my SSD is dead, I have to replace it. I put the device aside for a few weeks and when I checked it, it is worked again fine. I could log in, windows loaded perfectly several times, I could read and write the SSD (of course I made a backup save to have all my important files), but now it came back again to the same error message: couldn't find a bootable... It is important, that not the windows is broken as when I try to make a recovery with a surface image, it doesn't find the SSD itself, so I had the hint that maybe it is a hardver, SSD connection issue. While I could login into the windows and it worked fine I could also checked and repair corrupted files, software updates and SSD maintenance. OP system should work properly.

Therefore, I bought a simple NVMe, PCI-e (M.2, 2230) SSD enclosure and attached the SSD to another computer. I could read and write the SSD. As I put back to the Surface Pro 7+, it had the same error message and don't let recovery with an image because don't find the SSD. This is consequent, every time I test it (I did it 5-7 times), it remains the same. Externally I can read and write the SSD and internally there is no access. So I think that finally not SSD is broken, but the connection within the computer?

 

Do you have any idea how could I repair it or test it more? What could be a solution? Is there any other software solution? Is there any replacement part for it or it is integrated into the motherboard... I don't know.

@tiborbalazs are you strictly using Windows to do all of this? Have you checked to see if your SSD shows in the BIOS? Does your computer (not in Windows) recognize it?

You have some good detail here, assuming I am interpreting everything correctly. I'll try to see what I can do to make sense of this.
I definitely agree with @oldturkey03. Double check and make sure that the SSD is recognized in BIOS. You can use Microsoft's Guide to access the BIOS menu, and see if your SSD is shown. If it is not, but the SSD works in another device, then yes. I think it's safe to say it's likely the SSD connection to the board. In which case, there is a small carrier cable, that is usually coupled with the micro sd card reader that you can try to replace. Finding the part though may be difficult if that's the case. I've checked a few spots and haven't seen it.

If the SSD is recognized in BIOS, This sounds like your boot partition could be corrupt. Have you run any tests on the SSD on another machine? I would double check with CrystalDiskInfo that the SSD is in good health when it's connected to another device. If it's in good health, yes there are definitely some repairs to the boot partition, or Windows itself that can be made, but they are more complex, so I'll wait to detail those until I know what kind of issue we're looking at.

Honestly, I checked the BIOS (Surface UEFI), but I didn't found the SSD within the devices and I didn't checked what can it mean. Furthermore I just realized, that I have an icon in the right upper part of the UEFI page (hard disk with an X inside). As I checked it now, it means that no hard drive is recognised. I guess it finalizes my issue as now I know that it is a hardver problem. I also tried to check the motherboard availability, but I couldn't found, furthermore if it has to be replaced, I doubt that it worse the try. According to the actual status, what do you think?

@tiborbalazs I think if it's not recognized by your surface, but it can be seen in other systems, your connection to the motherboard idea is a good thought.

I am not sure that the UEFI page will tell you, and I know without getting into Windows it will be hard to tell, but does it recognize a micro SD card? If not, the cable that communicates those signals to the main board may be bad, or damaged.

You can also try a different SSD and see if that is recognized. If it is still unrecognized, that sounds like an issue with the connection to the main board.

At that point, you would need to open up the device and take a look, or take it somewhere where they can. Something definitely seems wrong, but it will be difficult to know what without some experimenting.

I highly appreciate it! :) I think that I am already at the point were I have to send it to repair (already contacted a few companies) and figure out who can do it and whether is it worth to repair or not at all.
