'New'/3DS XL Battery Calibration

Howdy.

Just ordered a battery from the website's store. I noticed the instructions for the procedure of calibrating the new battery that are on the item's page. For the first step, it says to charge the battery to full and then to let it charge for "at least" another 2 hours before moving onto the next step.

What is the longest amount of time past 2 hours from when it's fully charged that I could continue charging it to get the most benefit out of that step? I'm also curious what calibrating the battery properly actually results in afterward compared to a battery that hasn't been calibrated properly.

Like, for example, does the new battery end up holding/carrying a longer charge, etc.

Charge it full. Run it until it red lights and shuts itself off, recharge to full with it powered off. Do this 2 or 3 times. This is "battery calibration" or "training" procedure.

Just curious, why do your instructions differ from the instructions given on the item's page?

And just to make sure I understand your instructions, you're saying I alternate charging it to full while using the 3DS, and charging it to full with the the 3DS powered off. Repeat two or three times. Is that right?

@junterchute Play until it dies. Then set it to charge. Then when it's done charging, power on, play until it dies. Go through this process from start to finish 2 or 3 times. This way the 3ds will "learn" what a "full" and an "empty" battery is with regards to this new battery. This is pretty standard procedure for lots of devices using lithium batteries.

@rebtech Okay, thanks for clarifying what it does. Makes sense. I assume it'll come with some charge in it, then? So the first step is to use up whatever is in there. After it's dead, then I go through the loop of charging it to max and draining the battery entirely 2-3 times.

@junterchute Yeah a "new" battery should arrive either at what's called "storage charge", or full. This ordeal applies to other things as well like cellphones and laptops. Yup you have it right.

@rebtech Last question I have: when the battery is drained, I've heard it's a good idea to make sure it's completely drained by turning on the power afterwards several times until the 3DS doesn't turn on at all. Would you advise that I do this before each recharge during the calibration?
