Can the battery sustain 100W power for a a long time? Laptop charging
Hi !
I have no doubts that this battery can charge any smartphone but I would like to know if this powerbank can be used to charge a laptop that handles 100W for a sustained period of time (40 minutes for example) ?
Allmost all powerbank have a major flaw, they cannot sustain their maximal ouput power for more than a few minutes (generally 10 minutes) because of thermal throttling (of the controller, the mosfets the coils or the voltage regulators).
Thanks a lot and can't wait to order mine, seams perfect for remote small repairs !

Hi @francoismaro
What is the make and model number of the powerbank and also the laptop?
Charging a battery with a 100W load capability depends on a few factors e.g. how depleted the battery is when charging is first started i.e. how long it will take to fully charge it and what voltage/current is required to charge it.
Trying to charge a100W battery with a 56Wh battery won't ever fully charge it

@jayeff - I think the question is on the new FixHub Portable Power Station which offers USB-C support for other devices as well. This really needs to be answered by the iFixit team @amber

@danj
Thanks for that
The battery supplied by ifixit shows max of 5.2A @ 10.8V so it will be a bit involved to determine how much current it can supply and at what voltage and for how long when charging a device. Also allowing for the fact of the powerbank battery voltage slowly dropping as it discharges.
Haven't fully read the info on the powerbank but presumably current adjustment (regulation option?) is not there allowing for a slower charge rate so as to not heat up the powerbank too quickly triggering protection
Not easy.
Cheers

@jayeff - That’s why it’s an iFixit team which needs to answer as I too have no idea what they have within the unit for logic, there are a few tricks but not at a sustained level.

@danj
Agreed.
