Error message (53) when attempting to restore new logic board

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me with an issue I am encountering following the installation of a new logic board. The original logic board had failed with no power to the iMac. I purchased a new sealed logic board from a third-party reseller and completed the insulation as per the self-repair instructions. When I turn the iMac on I am presented with the black screen showing an exclamation mark and the restore URL on it. When I try to restore the via usb-c and with my M2 MacBook Air and using DFU, I get the iMac to turn on and start the restore but after few minutes I get the following error messages;

&

Has anyone encountered this before or know the possible issue?

Thanks

Are you trying to use the original Magic Keyboard with Touch ID with this new logic board? I don’t think that works for the same reason the MacBook Pro’s can’t as Apple has bonded the TouchID with the logic board.

Only Apple can replace the logic board as they have access to the special tool or if you bought the logic board directly from Apple they will give you the needed access to the tool via a paywalled site.

Thanks - I haven't got the MacOS installed yet to get use of the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Although I have paired it with my M2 Macbook and it allows touch ID to be used as normal with it.

@deejaygav79 - I think you’ll need to visit an Apple Store or authorized dealer to have them linkup with the fire walled recovery server they have access to.

Update, I took the iMac to the Apple Store and they kept it in for a few days but the Genius Bar couldn’t restore, same errors as I am getting. Resolution was to install a new logic board, I declined.

I have since reopened and checked all connections and noticed that the right hand fan has a tear on the ribbon cable and doesn’t spin when on start up (the left hand does spin). Would this likely be the issue?

@deejaygav79 - Well… a torn cable is not good and will need to be attended to. As far as the error condition I doubt any linkage if that was what you are thinking.

Hey, have EXACTLY the same issue on mine, along with new ones talking about:

The System cannot be restored on this device.
The operation couldn't be completed.
(AMRestoreErrorDomain error 53 - Failed to handle message type StatusMsg (FDR failure)) [AMRestoreErrorDomain - 0x35
(53)]

For context, mine is an iMac M1 with the same issues as yours, and like you, I also have swapped the board. DFU sees the device, but always fails on this step. Attempted on a MacBook Pro 14” on latest macOS. Any tips?

Sorry guy either there the logic board is bad (already tied to a different keyboard TouchID).just like the MacBook systems with TouchID the Power Button is bonded to the given logic board. These newer iMac's are no different! Once the logic board is bonded to a keyboard it's married for life. You can't break the bond to a different keyboard without first accessing the system (logic board) to then bind the second keyboard. DFU mode won't change that.

Hey, thanks for your quick response. I don’t have access to the original keyboard - that may be the issue - but to test it out I used a 16/2TB logic with daughterboard IO only over ribbon and shorted PPBUS while plugging in to get a DFU interface - it worked perfectly. Even with the board physically separated from display, fans, speakers, mic array, chassis too. I only used USB C to a MBP 14” M4 Pro which performed the restore on AC2, this error truly baffles me as when using a power monitoring system the wattage drops then spikes indicating a reboot but DFU fails just at that stage. There was no KB interaction throughout the restore, as desktop iMacs on Apple Silicon, as far as I know, don’t need any KB plugged in during DFU, and this was tested on my bare minimum setup (I/O board only facilitating connection) - AC2 confirmed a full DFU went through. Same setup on the board throwing the “Error 53” and that same hex (register?) and it fails again. I’ve also did a SHA256 of the IPSW, matches known hashes.

@makami - Apple has made logic board replacements really hard in 24" iMac's. A virgin board is the only way you can go and it needs to be via Apple self service program.

DFU Mode won't get you to the run state with a locked board (used logic board) unless you get the keyboard it was bonded to with it.

A virgin board won't have the needed key the two share as such it will allow you to bond a new keyboard to it.

At this point I think you need to get to an Authorized service center to unlock things using the argument you lost the keyboard. Maybe they will help you.

Thanks again Dan, your continued insight on this issue is much appreciated, and just as you mentioned, it is a virgin board - it shows a setting cog (similar look to framework’s logo) rather than a standard Apple logo, even when attempting to press and hold power to get to the boot picker. The flow looks like “Settings Cog” > “(!) support.apple.com/restore” screen.

So if I understand correctly, you’re saying that without the keyboard that came with the logic board, it will refuse to boot if it is a virgin logic board?

Also, how likely do you think Apple will add the missing config data to the EEPROM on the M1 SoC? I just want to gauge whether it’s worth it getting it sorted there (3h drive!) or if this is a dead end since it’s a brand new board sourced from outside their supply chain.

@makami - If it is a virgin board there is no tether to a keyboard as the keys have not swapped. Here’s a deep dive in how certificates are used 509 certs

A used board has a keyboard locked to it and without the original keyboard you can’t unlock the logic board.
