2012 iMac desk top Catalina display not working, only external monitor. Only wall paper but no menu bar or preferences option available

That can happen when you are running the extended desktop mode and the external is set as the primary display. Open up Displays from the externals displays visible menu’s under System Preferences. You should see two display Icons. Take a snapshot of the window and post it here so we can see the current setup.
If you don’t see the menus then you need to alter the external monitors settings to lower resolution, as the menu is out side of the view window the display offers.
