How do you remove the colored rings around the joycons?

I’ve seen in the first iFixit video that the joysticks can be removed from the outside, to be then able to free the coloured rings around the Joycon modules.

The video states that the sticks need to be twisted in some way but it doesn’t go into great detail on how to really do this.

Is the stick being twisted clockwise or anti clockwise? Is this damaging the stick?

Ist this similar to the Joycon 1?

Would be great to get some info on how to properly achieve this.

It seems that the colored rubber rings are essential for the proper functioning of the stick, given how difficult they are to remove. Therefore, I have no choice but to paint the rubber to match my customization of my NS2.

This is the video I received from a reddit user and is exactly what I meant.

It shows how to remove the sticks to get to the plastic rings.

How to remove coloured plastic rings from Switch 2 joycon modules.

Its still a bit tricky and I can see people damaging their sticks if they are not being careful.

That said, I was able to do this, get to the rings and reinstall my sticks without any issues.

Hi!

Here are the answers:

1: No. you need to disassemble the controler to get the stick out. You can’t get it out from the outside. This will damage the stick for sure. Nintendo has their reasons for this.

2: Yes, the process is similar like the first Joy-Con. So, can only be removed when disassembled.

This is not exactly what I mean. The video you posted shows how to remove the whole module by disassembly.

However, it also shows that the coloured ring gets trapped between the module and the thumbstick, without a clear explanation on how to remove it, even after you take out the complete module.

The ifixit Video shows the thumbstick beeing removed, but not how you do it.

Hi Thomas! Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Yes, it is trapped between them. It will stuck on the thumbstick. So the only way to remove it, is to take the black thumbstick off, but won’t be easy for sure.

However, it’s most likely that the replacement part will come together with the ring already on it. This makes the repair way easier and less chance that you will break it.

Only time will tell for sure when they are available.
