Backlight, keyboard light, even Apple logo Lights suddenly not working

Picked up a refurbished MBP and have been steadily upgrading it, mainly swapped out HDD for SSD and some OpenCore upgrades. Have had it working pretty consistently. Today I went to start it and no lights came on with the screen, keyboard, and Apple logo. Was curious if this was a common issue and what the best workaround was as far as part replacement would be?

You'll need to give us a bit more to narrow down things!

- When you pressed the power button did you get any response? Like startup sound or the spin up of the fans

- What is the color of the MagSafe cords LED? Amber, Green or not lit?

- On the side is a systems battery checker when you pre the button how many tiny LED's light up are they steady or blinking?

Thank you for your patience, I am super green when it comes to gettin inside of a computer so any and all help is appreciated.

MagSafe is Green.

Power up plays the major chord start up chime.

Systems battery checker will show full green light when pressing or unplugging MacBook from power.

Ok, that's great info!

That aims us to the display logic either the backlight driver circuit on the main logic board or the cable connection to the backlight LEDs within the display as the likely issues.

Grab a strong flashlight and aim it into the Apple logo in the lid, what faint you should see the icons of your desktop or any open Apps from the last time you where using the system. Do you see them?

Flashlight in the back showed my normal log in screen sans the actual laptop illumination.

@krowbizzle - Bingo! That's the backlight then. Time to pop off the bottom cover and inspect the LVDS cable connection as seen in Step 13 in this guide Changement écran MacBook Pro 15" Unibody mi-2012 what we are looking for is corrosion around the connector, check the soldered pins to the logic board and after properly disconnected the battery disconnect the cable to inspect its contacts for any damage.

par

@danj So I pulled that ribbon cable out and saw nothing out of the ordinary in the way of corrosion, dirt, or anything. I just pulled from that point shown on Step 13. Should I follow up further along the line?

@krowbizzle - Was the logic board connector clean as well?

Often this area gets messed up. Carefully slide the cable back in. At this point we need a multimeter to check the voltages of the logic board as well as checking a fuse. This is delicate work as you don’t want to short out things.

par

@danj Ive been away but have been researching. Is this likely a fuse issue? And is that fuse located under the logic board requiring removal? Is it easier to replace the fuse or swap the logic board all together?
